      Constant Disconnects and Reboots!

Hi all, I've been lurking this board for a couple of months now as I've been trying to tame the beast that is Sky Broadband (to no avail). I am struggling to put up with the disconnects and lag spikes I experience during my day to day Internet ritual.

I am usually connected to an IRC server, a Ventrilo server, playing World of Warcraft and streaming a radio station via WinAmp, as well as trawling the web with Firefox.

Knowing the above, I can briefly explain what happens. The first sign is WinAmp constantly losing connection and buffering for a short period until it cannot establish a connection. My World of Warcraft client hangs until I get disconnected from server. I drop from Ventrilo and I cannot load up web pages either. What is strange though is that I am still able to send and receive messages via IRC for a while. This is when I reboot my router.

I have to reboot frequently, there is no distinct pattern, but I have to reboot the router much more often during the evening than I do the twilight hours.

I have taken the many steps I've read here in order to try and resolve the issues. UPnP is off. There are no other wireless networks within range, so the channel shouldn't be a problem. I am using channel 4 with mode: g & b.

      Re: Constant Disconnects and Reboots!

I haven't had chance to try the master/test sockets yet because my brother and I share a room and the nearest socket is an extension in the master bedroom. We run an extension cord from this socket into our bedroom and the router sits in our bedroom.

My brother has a desktop plugged into the router via ethernet cable, and I connect wirelessly through my laptop. I experience these connection problems both downstairs below the router, and sitting 1 meter away from it in my bedroom.

I'm no networking genius, but I kind of have a hunch that performance would be much smoother if the router was plugged into the master socket downstairs with cabled connections running from the router to our computers upstairs.

Sorry for the walls of text, but I am at the end of my tether with these disconnects, and my World of Warcraft guild is starting to see me as a liability in raids in arena.

Thanks for any help offered, Calum.

      Re: Constant Disconnects and Reboots!

I think you answered your own query! From what you say you are running from a cable extension, this is almost certainly at the root of your problems. You should plug the router into the Master socket and run ethernet cables from there to your PCs. Ethernet works OK up to 100Ms, so you should not have distance problems. Hiding the cables may be a problem, but it can be overcome. The alternate is wireless adapters, which may or may not give you good reception. It depends largely on the construction/layout of your house.
