I want to use OpenDNS, how can I do it!?

I have read some EXTREMELY GOOD reviews of using the Open DNS's name servers as opposed to your standard ISP's.

The question is how to do it in the Sky router. Obviously I can do it directly on the PC but the Sky router appears to over ride it, can these settings be done directly in the router config pages?

      Thanks, Chris.

You will need to change it on the Network card properties, and then reboot the PC and the router, this should then use the OpenDNS entries.

There is no way of changing it in the router unless you use the Netgear Firmware, but then you have the risk of it going wrong.

If you are not sure of how to do it in Vista give me a shout and I will give you the instructions.

One thing I noticed whilst experimenting with OpenDNS, I couldn't stream the BBC News live feed from the website. Apparently this is because going via OpenDNS resolves to a BBC server as if the requester is "outside the UK". You get a nice message saying you have to be a UK resident to watch!

Re: I want to use OpenDNS, how can I do it!?

Is the general consensus then that using the Open DNS name servers is faster than using Sky's own name servers and what real world performance differences could I expect.

@ NewsreadeR - if I do flash the firmware to Netgears own (I am comfortable with doing this) can I set the name servers to use in that? Could Mossywell adapt this change in anyway to his "Bounce Sky Router" application so that it could be changed on the fly?

I can do it on each PC as it will only take 5 mins if the above isn't possible, but it's nice to think that it would be all taken care of by the Router.

Finally, security/privacy - What is Open DNS like for this? I download via BitTorrent and P2P applications reguarly and use Tor/Privoxy to mask my IP address. Would Open DNS get around this issue, as using the like's of Tor makes the internet go very slowly as you are in essence, using someone else's connection.

      Thanks, Chris.

afaik Yes you should be fine to add your own DNS, however (without sounding boring) It's against the T and C's of Sky BB to flash the firmware - your call.

This will just make think the Netgear think it is a normal Netgear - not a Sky one.

Could Mossywell adapt this change in anyway to his "Bounce Sky Router" application so that it could be changed on the fly?
I am sure Mark will be along shortly to confirm.

Well that was my experience about a month ago. Some of the feeds worked ok (such as Click which is prerecorded and seems to be aimed at a global audience), but the live streaming News 24 and the Sports News video roundup wouldn't work because those streams are for UK based viewers only and (according to the BBC) I am not in the UK.
