      It's Getting Boring Now ...

I've been rebooting my router for 8 months now ... every time my noise margin drops below 7 my browser wont work ... I'm still connected to the net so my router stats says but I cant browse ... so I have to reboot my router to be able to browse again ... I've been doing this for a little over 8 month now (I joined SkyBB on 5th Dec 06)

I've tried to flash my router

but I'm one of the few that it keeps freezing on at a certain point ...

So now I'm posting my stats form Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4

You have very high line/CRC errors have you tried plugging the router into the test socket behind the face plate of your main BT socket?

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

I haven't tried that ... my pc is up stairs and there are 2 phone boxes in the house ... the main BT one with the face plate is at the bottom of the stairs and the other is in the room below my pc ... so I got an extension with another BT box fitted from the box below my pc room to my pc as this seemed a tidier way of doing things ...

I've also got my UPnP turned off as are my wireless settings as I don't use or need them ...

would I be better off running an extension from the main BT box at the bottom of the stairs ... this 1 has a removable front plate ... unlike the old style BT box (with no removable front plate) that I currently have connected to my pc upstairs ...

Tidier, but not as efficient! You really must try to plug router directly into the Master socket. Even then if you have hard wired extensions, you may still have problems. This is why you are always advised to test your connection from the Test socket, behind the Master socket face plate. I know it is a pain moving a PC near to this socket, but it has been proved time and time again that this can show dividends. If your connection does improve and I am certain it will, a more permanent solution can be found.

Looks like that's the next step then if there is no other solution to my problem ... ?

once set up next to the master socket what's my next step ... ? to run Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 again and report back with the stats ... ? or I'm I just to try and run my pc form there for a day or 2 ... ?

First check if you have hard wired extensions, you can do this by removing the face plate, if there are wires attached to the plate, plug into the the TEST socket and run for 24 hours and do some heavy downloading. If there are no wires on the faceplate, just replace it and plug the filter into the Master socket and do the same. Take the stats and post them. Remember if you have hard wired extensions they will be disconnected when you take the faceplate off.

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

If you like you could try one thing before you start lugging your PC about, Remove the face plate of all the sockets includiing the main one and check that only pins 2 and 5 are connected to any extension wiring, any other pins connected are known to cause line/noise problems like you have. Then run the PC for a good few hours with heavy usage ie downloading or something. Then take the stats again and post them. If that dosen't help then its move the whole lots to the main socket and again run for a few hours and get the stats again. By removing the face plate of the master socket if it is wired correctly then it disconnects all extension wiring therefore isolating the problem to either the BT line or your wiring. Plug in extension leads should be avoided at all cost because they tend to be poor quality cable.

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

I've checked the master socket with removable face plate and there are no wires attached apart from the wires to the socket its self ... there was however extra wires connected to the box that has the extension to my pc so I disconnected them to leave only #2 and #5 connected ... and I did a quick retest

and the 1st thing I noticed was my downstream rate went from 3968 Kbps to 5376 Kbps ... I'm not sure of the other stats as I've no idea what they're for ... ?

unfortunately I don't have time to do much more now as I start work in an hour and a half ... I'll do some heavy downloading and re-post some stats as soon as I can, as I guess the stats above will probably be no good due to lack of heavy usage / downloading

You need to reset your router! the errors from previously are still showing so cant tell, then run for a few hours. Are you saying there are no wires at all connected to the back of the lower half of the face plate on the master socket? If so where is your extension wired from?

I'll reset my router straight after this post Koala5 ...

as for the extension that runs from another BT socket (old style no removable plate) to my pc. it comes from my dining room ...
It was easier to show you than explain ...

the red line is the BT phone line to my house. I run my pc via an extension to another phone socket in my bedroom above my kitchen from the 2nd socket ...

right I'm off to reset my router ...
