Ok is the one in the hall a split face plate type? If so which bit is the wire that runs to socket 2 connected to? It should be connected to the back of the lower half of the faceplate the removeable bit, pins 2 and 5.

It looks like you may have an illegal installation! One phone line = One house entry. Have a look at the back of the Master socket, how many wires are connected? It looks like 2 of the wires on the main line have been looped back to a junction box, then to your 2nd socket.

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

You still have way too many errors, disconnect all wires apart from pins 2 and 5 in "ALL" sockets including the main one. The main BT line from the pole or underground whatever should go straight to the "MASTER SOCKET" thats usually the split face one, then any extensions should be connected and run from the terminals on the back of the lower part of the face plate on that master. So as above its looks like your wiring is a bit of a DIY hash up and as far as BT is concerned it would be illegal. It dose sound like you may have to ditch the lot and start again.

Have a look at the junction box your 2nd socket comes from. Where are the wires connected? If they are not looped back from the Master socket it looks like they are spliced straight on to the main line. I don't think BT would be very happy with this and really, it is not doing your connection any good.

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

Here's what the box out side my house looks like ...

CLICK ME FOR A BETTER LOOK ...

The 2 brown wires lead into my house ... they where just renewed by a BT engineer about 6 to 8 month ago ... the grey wire that leads left is my neighbours phone line ... and the 4 black wires on the right are my sky+ and multi-room wires ...

I've just got in from work ... so I'll remove all wires in phone sockets tomorrow apart from #2 and #5 ...

also I guess if I have/had to ... I could easily cut the wires that lead to socket 2 in my house. so that would just leave the wires connected to my main socket and run a hard wire extension from that to my pc ... ? another option ... if disconnecting all wires apart from #2 and #5 form remaining sockets in my house doesn't work ... ?

Thats a weird way of doing things, never seen that b4 and very supprised BT did it. Try the pin 2 and 5 thing first see how you get on.
If you decide to disconnect the second socket, you would be better to try the computer by the main socket and if results are good then position the router by the main socket and run a long ethernet cable from one of the ports on the router to your computer, that is likely to give you the best results.

Re: It's Getting Boring Now ...

Well I removed all the wires from all phone sockets in the house apart from #2 and #5 ...

and as I did this I noticed (in phone socket 2) a couple of capacitors blown on the circuit board ... luckily I had a couple of the old style phone sockets in the shed so I replaced it ... since then I've notice my downstream connection speed has increased to 5792 kbps and touch wood I haven't had to reboot YET ...

I can't post any stats from the Sky Netgear DG834GT Utility version 0.4 as when I select download netgear.cfg file I get an error 404 not found File not found.

LAN UPTIME 50:32:36 - so far

also I've ordered a new NTE5 socket to replace the phone socket #2 in my house and I'm going to plug my router in it as recommend and run an ethernet cable to my pc upstairs ... not sure if this needs to be done as everything has got better but I know this would be the next step if it does go t!ts up ...

so I'd like to thank Koala5 and Isitme for all their help ... cheers

You could try installing Mosseywell's Bounce Router. This is actually easier to use once it is installed. 2 clicks gives you your detailed stats. You can get it HERE
