Basically i find that when my computer loses its network connection, my computer finds it really hard to repair the connection, usually takes a reboot of the system to renew the device's IP where as the computer doesnt take that much hassle, lately since i been with sky i am having a lot of internet connection drop off's, but im not sure whether its the Xchange to the Master Socket, or Master SOcket to internal wiring..... that is something i need to discover so first off im going to contact BT wholesale concerning a huge question mark i have over my xchange,
If i was to ring up a new service provider tomorrow they would tell me my xchange is only capable of 512kbps where as @ the moment i am currently connected @ 5872kbps, SEVERAL ISPS wish to argue with me telling me what they see on their screen is gospel;... ok so their software is pretty much the same across the board.. and my postcode gives my exchange as redruth and when they enter my phone number they get max D/L is 512, figure that out?.... probs with phoneline from exchange@s u think?

If you go back to basics we may be able to diagnose what is wrong. First take your detailed stats from the Master socket, remember you must run for a few hours and do some heavy downloading. After this remove the front plate from the Master socket and plug in to the Test socket, once again run for a few hours and download. Post both sets of figures so we can have a look.

If you feel you can't run too long without disconnecting, run as long as you can. To get really accurate figures you should really run for 24 hours to cover all the different time sectors, but this is not always possible.

      Re: Dg834gt

just wondering..... i cant explaing the internet noise margin being so up and down, had a brainwave, or maybe a slap of common sense that the router might be overheating, with all the data transfer of downloading 500kbps downstream and 70kbps upstream for 5 hours constant, and also streaming media onto the media centre over the network. that could explain the loss of the network connectivity because its overheating, ive now added the feet that come supplied, so ill see if that makes a difference..

Sorry, I did not realise that you were not using the feet. Unfortunately it it is not made very clear that these must be used to avoid some of the heat problems.

      Re: Dg834gt

I'm averaging a noise margin of 6 - 6.5 db im sure thats not normal.

      Re: Dg834gt

Many have difficulty holding the connection when the SNR is as low as this, but when I was on Connect my SNR never rose above 6.8. and I never had problems. Now I am on Mid, it never drops below 7.6 and is still very stable.

Have a look at Saturday's excellent piece on this, it may give you a better idea what is happening. It is not too technical and is written in a language most will understand.
