Wifi connected at 54.0Mbps... but transfers only about 400kb/s!

Another irritating problem with my router which I'd appreciate any advice on.

I've established a wireless connection with my laptop at 54Mbps with 'Excellent' signal quality. However, the bandwidth available between the laptop and the router seems to be capped at around 400kb/s. For example, if I run a speedtest (eg at www.speedtest.net) on the laptop, I'll only get around 350 to 400kb/s (it's never exactly 400), whereas running the same test on my desktop machine with a wired connection to the router yields a result of 12000kb/s.

I've updated the drivers for the wireless chipset on my laptop. I also experience this problem when I'm in the same room as the router, so it's not connected with losing signal through walls etc. I've tried different channels in the Wireless Settings on the router but this makes no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why I'm not realising the potential of the 54Mps wifi connection I should be getting?

      Thanks!
