Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

      Hi Can anyone help??

I recently signed up to Sky Connect at 5 per month with 40GB Allowance.

I plan to work from home a quite a bit and wanted to keep track of my usage against the monthly allowance as I'm exchanging large files with my work server.

This may be an incredibly stupid question

but I was wondering if the Router stats give any indication of the actual usage. The TXPKTS & RXPKTS fields are I assume "Packets" of some sort but I didn't know whether these could be converted into the actual GB usage or whether they are tracking something entirely different.

I've posted my stats below and would appreciate someone telling me if I'm barking up the wrong tree or not

      Thanks

Nope. Your router stats do not show useage.

This is one of the biggest gripes I have, if Sky are going to enforce useage limits, they should really have a way of measuring your useage.

I personally use DUMeter, but its $19.95 per licence per machine. (although we got a free licence to review it)

Well worth it and accurate, there are other free alternatives around.

I use Netmeter, which is free. It's been in permanent beta for several years but has been working fine with my XP. The author has finally released a finished version that I am now trying. It's very simple, free and seems to be exactly what I need.

Get it here:NetMeter 1.1.2 (stable) released

Re: Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

Thanks to NewsReader and DFlour69 for prompt replies, much appreciated.

I guess I should've known that Sky wouldn't make it easy!!!!

I'll have a look at both links although the FREEBIE site sounds promising providing it does the trick.

Meanwhile have a look at the future, what are the chances of Sky moving in this direction??

Re: Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

NewsreadeR is correct - to enforce download limits, the ISP should provide this information in its customer portal.

Also useful would be a service status page!

Lots of ISPs provide this information through their customer portal - come on Sky Broadband!!! Maybe it''s coming soon???

In a household running a network comprising 3 Apple Macs, 1 PC and 2 TiVos (all of which use internet access), it's not really an option to use single user software such as NetMeter etc. (especially on the Apple Macs and the TiVos, as the software is invariably PC only!)

OTOH, I have read elsewhere on this forum that Sky is not (at present) very bothered about enforcing download limits, but I have no evidence to prove this.

Here is a screenshot of Netmeter's 'Totals and Reports' screen, taken this am. As you can see, I've been cautious and set my limit as 39 GB. You can also set the date you want your limit to start.

Re: Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

I use Netmeter as well as it is a nice and small program that works quietly in the background.

When I was with BT they never used to provide and tools so you could monitor what you are using. I don't know if that has changed now.

Re: Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

The NetMeter Thumbnail that Dflour69 added looks pretty professional, I hadn't imagined that this piece of software would look that good and I think this will probably do the job, thanks again for sugesting this.

BUT........Two Questions if you guys don't mind

      1. Is everyone who's used NetMeter happy that it's Spyware free??????

      2. If I've read SPEEDYRITE post (5) correctly am I right in assuming that the Netmeter only works on a single PC as I will shortly be getting a Qnap TS109 NAS drive and this has the functionality to add a Bit Torrent Client to the NAS itself so that you can download/upload even when the PC is not connected to the network( I use a laptop so its frequently totally disconnected). Would the Netmeter software on the laptop log the NAS traffic in addition to anything the laptop itself is using??

      Thanks

Re: Calculating ACTUAL Usage against the 40GB allowance

I'm pretty sure Netmeter is spyware free. To tell you the truth, it had never occurred to me.
Can't help you with your second question.
