Zone Alarm etc-I don't know if this has already been discussed?

      My apologise if it has.

I've used Zone alarm & Avast for ages now so continued with Sky BB. I have also uninstalled both utilities to install McAfee, but reverted back to them again (uninstalling McAfee) after my pc seems to slow right down. Can I ask if Zone alarm can affect both your speed and connections? I'm using a desktop pc and ethernet cable, but have found problems both with connections and speeds, so removed ZA and have turned to Windows own firewall. I'm thinking on the lines of the routers got its own firewall so why not use XP's own-right or wrong?

I can honestly say that so far tonight my connection and speed have vastly improved through NOT having ZA on or active. It's whether or not my connections secure enough to stay like this? it should be with using ethernet?

I too noted the same in:
      Another way to improve speeds

Firewalls and antivirus software do slow down your downloading or throughput speeds. The amount depends on the processing power of your pc.
The faster the pc the less of an effect in reducing your speed. Turning these security suites off will result in improved downloading speeds - just as you noted in your post.

As for the firewall protection, you should be more or less secure using the router's plus Window's own firewall. But what about the anti-virus/anti-spyware protection?

After trying different security programs, I have found an alternative product which is very light on the computer's resources. This means no loss in downloading speeds. It has provided me with very good antivirus, antispyware and firewall protection for almost a month. And best of all - it is free! This superb security suite comes from the makers of the highly respected NOD32 antivirus program. It is called the Eset Smart Security. The free beta version that I have been using is available at ESET - Essential Security against Evolving Threats. Ofcourse there is no official support and the antispyware only works with MS Outlook, but overall it gives excellent protection with no slowing of downloading speeds. I will be very happy to purchase the full version when it is released.

PS: advice is given in good faith; please do not change your computer's security settings without adequate backup protection.

Many thanks ratanw, for your kind words. I've still got Avast antivirus, AdAware and at the moment Spybot installed.

I'm aware of the NOD32 program and will keep it in mind-thanks.
