Connected wirelessly however internet isn't working. Please Help

      Hello everyone,

I've got a problem that is driving me mad. I've had my Sky broadband switched on today and the desktop (hard wired) is connecting fine. The laptop is connecting to the wireless network absolutely fine (WPA) but I can't access the internet. I never had any problems with my previous router.

I've tried everything from the channel to the encryption method but nothing seems to work. I connected the laptop directly to the router and it worked fine.

I've been onto Sky support but they weren't able to help.

I'd be very grateful for any help anyone could offer me

      Thanks.

mike69, the problem may be with your computer's firewall. It may not be allowing your new wireless network to connect to the internet. Check with your software's help pages about allowing a wireless network into the 'trusted zone'.

Hi, I've tried turning off the windows firewall and my AVG firewall but it didn't make a difference.

When I used my old router I could connect wirelessly without any problems

You could check if your laptop is connecting wirelessly to the router by opening the router config page - http://192.168.01/start.htm.

If this page doesn't open, then recheck your wireless configuration.
Other option to try is connecting with the encryption disabled.

If you are not getting the to config page wirelessly, your laptop and router are not communicating with each other.
      Try this:
Turn off the wireless on the laptop.
Connect the laptop and the router by the ethernet cable. Then open the config page (http://192.168.01/start.htm), then Wireless Settings (left column) > Security optons > Disable > Apply.
Remove all wireless/encryption settings from your laptop. Disconnect the ethernet cable, turn on the laptop's wireless. It (hopefully) should now detect the new (unencrypted) network. Try to log on the router now.
If this works - we will proceed to securing your network.
PS: Try the above first with your firewalls turned on, if no joy, try with them turned off.

This may sound dumb, but it happens. Make sure there isn't another SkyBB user with wireless nearby and you're trying to connect to their system by mistake. Solution is to rename your SSID from the SKY12345 format to something unique.

I am having the same problem with trying to connect with netgear WG111 and a WG511 USB wireless cards.

My laptop with an inbuilt card connects fine.

      Driving me mad.

I might post a seperate request with my details.

Seems to me quite a few people experiencing this.

Talking Re: Connected wirelessly however internet isn't working. Please Help

Hi there, Am new at this so please bear with me. I too have experienced v.similar problems with my laptop. Mine has a built in modem and card and following a sucessful night surfing the net I logged in the following morning to collect my mail and could not get on. The laptop was connected to the net, the router was working although when I rung Sky they went through the spill and eventually toldd me I had a faulty router. Thus I reeived another in the mail within the week (great but more hassle). After another install I tried again with no luck and another phone call later found out they thought this 2n router too was faulty. Now on my 3rd router I called in a mate who confirmed my first suspions that all was well but something wasn't quite right. Eventually after a phone call again to sky (only this evening) I spoke to a genuine guy who seemed to know a little more than the average bod in their call centres and ran through absolutely every option with me. All was looking glum until we tried the very last thought. My system Home Xp was working with Internet Exploer version 7.0, the security is so great on there it would not lt my internet connet. Thus I had to unistall and go back to version 6. If all else fails try removing your Internet Explorer via your Control Panel and then turning your machine off. Once this has happened when you restart your computer will automatically revert to the previous version (so I am told reliably by the SKy bod) and hey presto it worked for me. You will however have to reload your wireless settings through your Control panel afterwards though. Hope this is of some help and I didn't get too confussing!

Regarding trotters post -it sounds like yet again too much security with good old microsoft!
All I can say is well done mate! no, you didn't make it confusing (not to me anyway ) and the end result was positive.
Mmmn IE7 eh? well, well, well......

and have you tried carrying those instructions out trotter? did they work?
