      Username and Password

Signed up for Sky 5 connect last weekend.
Spent some time sorting out how to get my username and password from the router when it arrives as I want to use my existing kit. Quite happy.
Got a confirmation letter yesterday giving details of time scales etc.
      Half way down it reads:
"Once your Sky Broadband Box is installed and we have contacted you to confirm that your Broadband line is live you will be ready to login and access all that Sky broadband has to offer. To login you will need to use the username and password below.

      Username: XXXXXXXXXX
      Password: YYYYYYYYYY

Keep this letter safe as you will need it to login etc"

Does anyone know why the policy seems to have changed?

      Re: Username and Password

Sky could help by making it more clear that there's a password in the router, an encryption passphrase, a password for the portal, a password into the router -- not to mention one's Windows password, e-mail password.....ad nauseum.

You have to wonder if all this is really needed.

Yes that is what these are for although you might need to reset the password if you can't get into the portal. You can do this by following the links from the sky.com page.

      Re: Username and Password

I think Sky thought that no one would know that a router uses a user/password to connect to the Internet, so don't bother even mentioning it. I have no doubt that many first time users don't know of it so it does not bother them, any more than plugging in a Sky digibox. Other ISPs have a lot of problems with users messing about with these settings and end up unable to connect.

      Re: Username and Password

Other ISP's like Newnet, which I signed up to the other week for another account that I use, make it absolutely foolproof to connect to their network and email etc.

They send out a letter with everything you need to know, and also a CD to hammer the message home. Infact I could not fault them on any aspect of their sales, signup, or TS. All answered the phone within 3 rings on an 0845 number.

Certainly refreshing and the point about the username and password made above, all it would take is Sky to add a couple of lines to their standard letter templates. And avoid loads of confusion.
