Windows Live Messenger - Error 80072745

Update: 17th October 2008 - Loads of visits to this thread today, it is MSN that is at fault, not your ISP.

Update: 16th June 2008 - Loads of visits to this thread tonight, it is MSN that is at fault, not your ISP.

I get an error when trying to log onto messenger (V8.1) Error 80072745.

Strangely though I can fix it by logging into my Sky router and clicking apply on the firewall rules, this immediately fixes the problem until i next reboot!

I guess clicking apply reloads the firewall rules but why would this make it work and why doesn't it work in the first place?

Do I need a custom service for messenger? I cant seem to find anywhere that tells me what ports to open.

BTW, trouble shooting on messenger says everything is fine it just wont log on.

      Any idea's?

      Stu

MSN is a bit of hit and miss recently, you only really need to add rules for MSN to file transfer.

PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Look down the list for MSN.

Thanks for the reply, I've opened up all the ports anyway and still no luck. But as i mentioned all i need to do is go to the router admin page, hit apply on the firewall without changing anything and it works just fine.

      Very very strange.

I don't know if this will help in your case but I had the same problem and found that by unplugging the mains plug from the back of the router, leaving it out for a minute, then plugging it back in again, solved the problem and I haven't had the problem since.

It's worth a try. You shouldn't lose any of your settings by unplugging and plugging back in again.

      Good luck

      I have the same problem.

Having to reboot/switch off the router isn't exactly ideal. I think it's a Netgear issue, because I had the same problem once in a while with my DG834GT when I was with a different ISP.

Re: Windows Live Messenger - Error 80072745

Hi. everytime i lose connection or i do a router reboot i cant get msn to sign back in. says something about firewall blocking etc. mcafee is set to give it full access etc and windows firewall is off. Doesnt seem to matter about wether uPnP is on or off either. I have tried everything in this thread bar the portforwarding as i dont understand it to be honest. To get msn working again i have to do a pc reboot

any help appreciated as its really annoying me now

Have you tried disabilling McAfee to see if it is a problem with it.

      Just tried that. Didnt help

Its something to do with the inbuilt firewall or portforwarding must be. i havent really touched any of that as im not confident of doing it. i havent touched the firewall settings or messed anything about in the services section of the router. When i run msn troubleshootings it stops at the key ports section of the testing so must be netgear firewall or the port work. If someone could show me how to set any of this it would be most welcome as i dont really understand the tutorials on this site. my setup is 1 pc connected to router via wired ethernet. In the meantime im gna have to reboot the pc to get msn to work again
