I got to say in sky's defence

now the 10 day period is over the rooter seems to have settled down - im getting 512k/sec constant and it dosent seem to just lose its connection - however it's still not a patch on cable but will be kept as a backup - well at 5 quid a month its cheaper than dialup

Connect is a rebadged BT product i.e. no SKy equipment involved, so I guess you would get the same speed if you were with BT broadband, you must be some distance from the exchange or have major problems with your line for speed to be that poor.

Re: I got to say in sky's defence

the line was one that was reactivated with a new number - i am 2.07km from the exchange so i would probably get upto 16mb although my DB is 47 down but ive had 23mb when i was ontop of my old exchange so i know what i am missing and im bored of it to be honest

i could just get a PAYG dialup but thats slow and if i needed to download anything big that would soon rack over 5 quid so ill just keep the sky connection as abackup - my wife can use it anyway on her laptop.

Mmmm I am probably about same distance as you from the exchange and I get 8mb no problem, so there must be some problem somewhere.

Samknows measures straight line distance. Few lines are laid in a straight line, most follow roads with the occasional detour. Can you imagine how many trenches would have to be dug to run every line straight to each house?

Attenuation, other than on a line with gross problems (and I mean practically unusable), is a pretty accurate measure of the actual line length.
