Bizzare connection dropping to 24mbps 11,1

Hi, Im new to the forums although ive been lurking for a while!

Ive had the sky max package for about 5 months now, and at first a had a similar problem to most people as in connection dropping and having to reboot my computer. I found the solution on this website, and it worked great for a while. Now a new problem has popped up. After a random amount of time, (seems to be every few mins or so) my wireless connection drops from 54mbps to 24 or 11 or sometimes 1! and it randomly changes and sometimes goes back to 54mbps although not all the time. Its happening on both mine and my partners laptops and is baffling me!

      So far ive tried:-

      Changing the wireless channel
Changing the settings on my laptop to only connect at g (54mbps)
      Updated laptop drivers

      Any ideas?

      Thanks

You may be at the margins of the wireless range (given all the obstructions and interference in the average home). So fading is not surprising and is accompanied with a change in the displayed speed (which may or may not affect your actual data rate).

Try relocating the equipment and/or any sources of interference (cordless phones, video senders etc).

I forgot to mention that when the connection speed drops , i get a significant drop in speed, i.e its unusable.

When its working properly i get 4658 downstream and 400 upstream which is rubbish i know but aparently thats the max i can get in my area, Not sure why im paying for max then!

Presumably you know about turning off UPnP in the router -- may not help but no harm unless you use P2P.

Okay, I don't anything about Limewire (except that it's a virus magnet) but I think UPnP is something to do with that kind of stuff.

To access the router firmware you put 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of Internet Explorer and you should be greeted by a login box User name is admin Password is sky. Look for UPnP and turn it off. Log out.

But while you're in there check out things like changing the SSID -- don't touch it yet -- but long term you want to change from the default name given by Sky because it advertises the fact that you have a Netgear router and so makes it easier to hack your system. It also advertises to burglars that you probably have a decent telly, computer, etc -- they only have to tie the wireless signal to the house with a Sky dish.

I am still waiting for my (SKY) router to be delivered but I have experienced this same issue on a Netgear device.
The resolution was to buy a decent router/WAP

If I ever recieve my SKY device, I wil be using it as an ADSL modem/switch only. I will use my existing Linksys router to provide wireless connectivity.

BTW I spent 2 weeks trying to resolve the issue on the netgear router. Firmware upgrade, replaced the device, upgraded the aeriel, exchanged numerous emails with Netgear support. Gave up, bought a Linksys on eBAY and wished it was the first thing I had done.
