No, as Sky had already agreed on a contract for those.

Re: Sky to pull major channels from Virgin Media

Calculation from Information at digitalspy (Will try to find the sources for the figures)

Sky have reduced thier prices to take the channels on virgin. with just a 20% increase. This is only until the Sky channels are pulled from Freview. At that point though, by my calculations, a 20% increase would become a 46% increase:

If 73.8p per subscriber includes a 20% price increase over the existing deal, then that makes the existing price 61.5p per subscriber.

After the Sky channels come off Freeview, the price would rise to 90p per subscriber, which is a 46% increase over the existing price of 61.5p.

Virgin though, say that there's a minimum payment upward of 40 million- the inference seemingly being, that based on current subscription levels, the increase per subscriber would be even higher.

I believe that Sky have argued, that they are offering additional channels that aren't in the existing deal, but I think Sky are bundling some channels, that Virgin Media wouldn't be concerned about carrying, if they were being offered the opportunity to buy channels individually.

The premium channels are required to be avaiable to any operator who wants them as they have a virtual monopoly. The prices are fixed by ofcom.

There are no Telewest/NTL/Virgin cables anywhere in County Durham.

Shame really as i would have liked a choice.

Same here, I am in a ex Telewest area but seems from what I have heard BT purchased the franchise for the estate when it was built and blocked Telewest putting Cable in.

I have had Sky since it first came out, to be totally honest. Even more with the underhand tricks by sky trying to kill Virgin by out pricing it's channels. If I could get Virgin Cable I would Switch across to them and ditch Sky. I really do think (and hope) this will backfire on Sky.

Re: Sky to pull major channels from Virgin Media

I cant believe people would want to go to Virgin Media. Its still NTL / Telewest with a glossy new name and signage. Having worked for NTL i am amazed they are still around after filing for chaptor 11 and closing many fault centres down saving money.

sorry but i am a bit bitter about NTL aka VirginMedia

You do realise that Virgin could have more than paid for the Sky channels with the amount they spent on the negative advertising campaign.
Virgin had posted out their channel guide magazines, minus the Sky channel listings, before negotiations fell through.
Sky offered to rent cable space from Virgin and air the channels at their own cost (obviously on a pay per view basis), this would be at no cost to Virgin and the customers would still have access to the now missing channels. Virgin refused.

Virgin had no intention of working this out, they tried to paint Sky as the bad guy when all along this was a media stunt that went wrong.
