The main reason I keep subscribing (variety), is the convenience and simplicity of the sky+ recording and catchup features. If I were to switch to another box, it would need to be as simplistic (to use) as the Sky one is, for my mother, who suffered a stroke a few years back. Is there such an 'all in one box'? (needs to use existing dish)
Sadly not that I've read on other forums. All the other box lovers even said Sky's UI/speed/simplicity and features were the best.

May I mentioned the V-word? Is Virgin's box a bit well sh*t compared to Sky too?

The closest I can think of is a Youview box, but that does have it's flaws (although I haven't heard any major complaints from my parents).

I suggest whatever box you buy is to get it from somewhere which will allow you to return it without complaint (I think Amazon, Tesco and Asda have a 30 day 'try it' policy but double check before purchase).

The simple fact is that the best box (provided that it is working) is the one that you are accustomed to using. Even with the best design and features (bells and whistles) a new box will initially require extra effort.

As for the price rise it really depends on the channels that you and your mother like to watch. The original pack is cheaper, provides live pause and recording facilities and is not subject to a price rise this June.

"We've added the following new clause to the Subscription Payments clause in each of your TV, Sky+ and HD Terms and Conditions to make clear what happens if you miss a payment you owe us: If you miss any payments you owe to us, including for any Sky service, we may charge you a reasonable fee, or interest at the yearly equivalent of 4% over barclays Bank plc's base rate for the whole period of any late payment, to compensate us for you breaking these Conditions. Any interest is worked out daily. We may also charge you a reasonable fee for handling any payment instruction that is cancelled, returned to us because you do not have enough funds in your account, or is not cleared by your bank. Details of these fees can be found on sky.com/latepaymentfee . These fees will not be applied to any amount you have not paid because it is the subject of an ongoing dispute between us. You will be responsible for paying all reasonable debt recovery fees/charges incurred in recovering your debt, including fees charged by any debt collection company we use. We will send you a reminder or call you before applying any late payment fees or instructing a debt collection company. This change comes into effect on 1 July 2015. Please keep a copy of this letter for your records as you may need to refer to it in the future."

Something to think about before cancelling the old DD in a fit of pique!

Re: Sky TV Price rise June 2015

Many years ago, I had an unknown problem with the payment of my sky bill.

This went on for over 6 months before being sorted.

Every month during this period, my sky would be switched off. I would phone sky and they would tell me that my bank had not paid the direct debit and therefore I probably had insufficient funds.
I knew I did, so always rang the bank and they said that sky had not requested a payment. I then rang sky again and they denied that saying that payment had been refused.
I paid the bill by debit card.
This happened every month for over 6 months.
Then the problem whatever it was ended and the payment was always made.

I have no idea what the problem was as the bank kept insisting that sky had not requested any payment and sky kept insisting that requested payments were being refused.

My bank details were correct, there was nothing obvious wrong and nobody would admit it was their fault.

If these new terms had been in place at that time, I would have been hit hard.

Had the same problem, was always sky claiming the bank refused payment, the bank always claimed it was sky not asking for it, was enclined to believe the bank, as all other DDs went out ok. Even set up new direct debit, still the problem persisted, in the end cancelled the subscription, went and bought a freesat box, end of problem.
