New Sky Viewing cards being supplied

Sky are now shipping a new style of viewing card in some cases to their customers.

Currently there is no official comment but some people are speculating that this is a sign that the new card will be shipped to everyone. So is it goodbye to the white viewing card and hello to the new red viewing card?

I am surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. Cisco should have followed the policy of their predecessor to insist that viewing cards are replaced every five years. If my memory serves me correctly it is nearly six years since the previous (blue for white) replacement begun. I am aware that the current encryption system has never been cracked and that replacing every viewing card is a costly operation for BSkyB but this should not be used as an excuse for complacency. Sky would lose a lot more money and may not survive if their access control system was compromised.

Re: New Sky Viewing cards being supplied

There was an article some time back showing that there are a number of non-Sky STBs in production and being sold so that people can watch Sky TV at a cheaper monthly rate.

Sky have changed the encryption for their HD channels, which is why the Thomson STBs finally became unusable. The cards weren't changed, but the EPG firmware was updated to cope with the changes.

Since this is all about Sky's revenue, they are unlikely to provide any specifics about what changes have been made and what further changes are planned. I would suggest that it is safe to assume that Sky will be monitoring the firm or firms who are in the business of selling the non-Sky STBs.

I did read on the Official forum that all Thomson boxes issued by Sky had been replaced. I don't think they took responsibility for boxes sourced outwith Sky.

By the way you have an R in Scubbie which should not be there.

From my understanding ALL the Thomson Sky+ HD STBs have been swapped out with any current Sky TV customers. The offer has now closed. If anyone still has one then the advice would be to call Sky ASAP.

I know at one point that the white Sky+ Thomson STBs were also being swapped out, but the last blitz didn't target these so there may still be some out there with some people, along with some Sky+ HD STBs that are being used for Freesat from Sky.

If anyone sees a Sky branded Thomson STB in the shops, the advice is leave it there. Currently I advise purchasing a DRX89x STB if you are looking for a secondhand STB.

As for the new viewing cards, at the present time they are not being sent out to existing customers as a general update roll out, so there is no need to panic at this time.

At this stage there is no information available to support this statement.

I know in the past that Freesat from Sky users had to pay for a new card, but I repeat the statement above: At this time the new cards aren't being sent out to existing Sky TV customers as a standard part of any planned roll out.

Depending how long it is since the card was supplied will determine whether it will be replaced free of charge. Otherwise it will cost 25 for a replacement viewing card.
