I don't think this is the case. The subscription costs pay for the channels. The adverts are the profits as far as I can see on Sky. When ad revenue goes up so do the profits, when it goes down so do the profits.

Re: Sky enhances Sky AdSmart with new functionality for advertisers

I am just not interested in any adverts, just like I get aggressive when stopped entering or leaving a store and being asked if I want double glazing or other product.

If I want a product, I will look for it. I don't need to be told and resent being told what I want!

I never watch adverts since having sky+ and never will unless in a cinema where I don't have much choice.

Re: Sky enhances Sky AdSmart with new functionality for advertisers

Fair comment dog-man. Don't let them wind you up though. A simple "no thank you" should be enough.

A few months back I was watching something on YouTube where someone had recorded something in the states where the person on the PA kept pushing different things every 10 seconds or so. Thankfully the UK is nothing like that.

The ads do serve a purpose though. Companies change products (hair shampoo is a great example) all the time. Sometimes it helps to know this is happening.

The ads also are a place where the channel let you know which TV series are starting or films coming. Sky are pushing some of the content in the Box Sets at the moment. Some of this can be useful to know, but it doesn't mean that I will definitely watch it all.

As for booking holidays to Disney in France or buying that new Audi, count me out.

A question of curiosity, how exactly does the localised advertising work, in a technical sense?

Re: Sky enhances Sky AdSmart with new functionality for advertisers

Sky will have collected information on where a subscriber lives. Initially this was collected via a survey, the changes mentioned in the initial post indicate that they may now use your subscriber information to get the data.

This information will be used when an advertiser say in Western-Super-Mare wants to let people within 20 miles know about a product they are selling, then you could find yourself targeted. Someone in Bath would not be targeted as Bath is just of 20 miles from Weston.

It is when they purchase the advertising that the marketing department will make the selections available, with figures, but without stating who specifically will receive the ads. The advert, along with all the others, will then be aired on the hidden channel for everyone to record.

You box will be instructed which ads are applicable to it, how many times each should be played and what time frame/s they should be played.

When the time comes to watch the adverts a signal is sent to play say 'group b29' ads, your box will then play an advert which it is programmed to play within that group. Once they have all been played you should see the normal advert, not a substituted one.

Of course there will always be a new campaign that will use the slot 'b29' and when in a few months you play back something which you recorded today, that new campaign will use the same slot.
