Sky channel numbers change in August

a516digital : Sky channel numbers change in August
During August 2014, some services on Sky will be changing channel numbers. This affects both free and pay TV channels.

The move comes as more sections of the Sky channel guide or Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) begin to overspill and as new services prepare to launch.

Viewers are not required to do anything with their Sky box - but may need to remember some new channel numbers.

From 12th August 2014, the sports section has the following changes, following the rebrand of Sky Sports News HQ:

      Old New Channel Name
405 401 Sky Sports News HQ
      401 402 Sky Sports 1
      402 403 Sky Sports 2
      403 404 Sky Sports 3
      404 405 Sky Sports 4
      407 406 Sky Sports 5
      406 407 Sky Sports F1

HD viewers will see the HD versions of these channels occupy the slots above. For HD viewers, Sky Sports News HQ standard definition is at 408, Sky Sports 1 standard definition at 409 and other Sky Sports channels from 435 in standard definition.

Then on the 19th August 2014, further changes to the Sky EPG will occur. In most places, any gaps in the channel numbering system will be filled in, with stations moving up. a516digital understands that the changes will take place during the early morning.

In the entertainment genre, there are some mostly minor changes to the bottom end of the channels. Notably, Channel 4 HD moves from Sky channel 230 to channel 227.

Otherwise, there are some changes to SD/HD channel swaps. The version applicable to your subscription (e.g. whether you have HD or not) is usually listed first in the Sky Guide; for example: If you have HD, the HD version takes the place of standard definition version, the standard definition version is found lower down the channel list. So for example, Sky HD viewers will continue to receive ITV Encore HD on channel 123, but the standard definition version - the swapped channel - changes from 298 to 263.

      Entertainment changes:

      Old New Channel Name
      227 224 RT… 2 HD (Northern Ireland viewers)
      228 225 ITV4 HD/SD swap
(the main ITV4 channel for your subscription type stays on channel 120)
      229 226 Alibi HD/SD swap
(the main Alibi channel for your subscription type stays on channel 132)
      230 227 Channel 4 HD
      231 228 Sky Atlantic HD/SD swap
(the main Sky Atlantic channel for your subscription type stays on 108 )
      233 229 E!+1
      235 230 Sky Living HD/SD swap
(the main Sky Living channel for your subscription type stays on 107)
      236 231 More 4 HD/SD swap
(the main More 4 channel for your subscription type stays on 138, except in Republic of Ireland where More 4 HD is on channel 231)
      237 232 AIT Intíl
      238 233 DMAX+1
      239 234 TLC HD/SD swap
(the main TLC channel for your subscription type stays on channel 125)
      290 235 ABN TV
      291 236 Lifetime HD/SD swap
(the main Lifetime channel for your subscription type stays on channel 156)
      292 237 FilmOn.TV
      293 238 Showcase 2+1
      294 239 E! HD/SD swap
(the main E! channel for your subscription type stays on channel 151)
      296 261 True Entertainment +1
      297 262 Sky Arts 2 HD/SD swap
(the main Sky Arts 2 channel for your subscription type stays on channel 130)
      298 263 ITV Encore HD/SD swap
(the main ITV Encore channel for your subscription type stays on channel 123)
      299 264 Forces TV
      395 265 Info TV+1

The lifestyle genre, home to channels including "Food Network" will start to be phased out, with the lifestyle tab scheduled to be removed from viewer's EPGs over the coming weeks into the autumn. Lifestyle channels will be incorporated into the main Entertainment section of the EPG:

      Old New Channel Name
      246 243 Home
      247 244 Good Food (HD)
      248 245 Really
      249 246 Home+1

In sports, in addition to the changes occurring 12th August, channels 401-489 will be officially assigned to free and pay TV sports channels. Channels 490-499 are for pay-per-view sports channels.

There are minor changes to some religious channels, with some shuffling up to fill gaps between channels 582 and 596.

      599 596 ACBN

Children's TV will be expanded to cover channels 601-649, although current children's channel numbers remain the same, there's more room for future expansion.

This means that shopping channels will move down the list and start from channel 650 with QVC. In many cases, viewers can add 10 to the current shopping channel number to get the new number:

I think that makes sense, as does the general tidying up by filling in the gaps.
But sports 1 not on 401 & sports 2 not on 402 etc?
      That's a bit silly isn't it?

Re: Sky channel numbers change in August

Saw this reshuffle yesterday on the sky website.
Sky Help: Channel changes in the Sky TV Guide

If your an HD user, not much change really, apart from C4HD moving day a few places. Did expect more.
The epg is still very messy.
Would love to get rid of all the hd/sd swaps to the 900s, don't want to see them when we have the hd channels.

Re: Sky channel numbers change in August

Certainly I do think it would be nice to have all the HD channels together in one place, then swap them with their SD counterparts when the provider wants.

A lot of people like to record SD content in order to save hard drive space. Just ditching them in a place that would make it hard to locate them would be upsetting.

There is a lot of money involved in getting your channel as near to the top of the list as possible. People are generally lazy and not many of us can be bothered with scrolling through the whole planner to the last channels. Most of us will find something of interest long before we get to the end.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      901 bbc1 SD
      902 bbc2 SD
      903 itv 1 SD
      etc...

No 'ditching' in a 'hard to locate' position needed.
At least for most of them.

Film four HD is currently 315 & bbc three HD is currently 115, so a good example of a clash there.
To solve this i'd split the 900's into sections, a bit like the EPG already is.

Entertainment SD channels could be 900 - 925 or 950 for example.

I'd be worried that doing this would be a precursor to losing some or all of the BBC (out of area) regional variations from the EPG requiring them to be set up as additional channels with the consequent problem when a recording is required.

A minor, temporary sacrifice in the name of logic.
      I could handle that.

Where the HD and SD channels show exactly the same content just have one entry in the TV guide for both versions then have a HD/SD prompt when watching/recording with a default preference option in settings.

o Always choose HD when available
      o Always choose SD
      o Always prompt me

You could have separate settings for viewing and recording for maximum flexibility.

I think so too, it would have made more sense to make 407 the Sports News channel and leave the rest where they are. You would then know for SS4 you select 404 and not have to add a channel. No doubt they have a reason for it, but its hard to see what it is.

It's probably to give it priority status now it's called 'headquarters' but that could have been achieved by making it channel 400.

Sometimes sky really do baffle me.
