Sadly it isn't the best router on the market.
What do you reckon is the best router on the market? Would it be much of an improvement on the SR102?

Probably this one - The new VDSL top model: FRITZ!Box 7490 | AVM - Home Network with FRITZ! - DSL, LTE, Cable, WLAN, DECT and Powerline but its cost will make your eyes bleed.

All of Sky's competitors supply a better router than they do. There is just no comparison between the BT Hub5 and the SR102, but it cost twice as much.

only 280 in Amazon! Obviously it's technically superior to the Sky hub but would it, in practice, give major benefits to the average punter.

Its overkill for the average user really. Something like the Netgear D6300 would be a good choice for the average user. It has just about everything you need from an ADSL router.

In practical terms what benefits would I get over the SR102? Faster wifi or downloads?

There would be very little difference if any in the download speed. Where you benefit most is much faster WiFi, with compatible adapters and much faster exchange of files within your network.

I'm waiting for some clever sod to hack it and make it an ordinary wireless access point.

I'm pretty sure I posted this already but the free N upgrade router is the SR101.
The SR102 is only (currently) sent to *Brand New* ADSL broadband and Fibre broadband customers.
For existing customer with ADSL there is no real difference with the SR101 compared with the SR102 except they will be sent an SR102 if they upgrade to Fibre.
