Income from licence fees - 3.5bn apparently.

And it's not just the ridiculous payoffs that prevent the bbc from being even better.

According to sir michael grade, who was with paxman on newsnight the other day, they're making these kind of mistakes with our money all the time.

That's not their sole source of income either:

I don't mind paying the TV licence fee as its very much worth it and I don't think the Licence fee should have been frozen as I would quite willingly pay the extra amount for a rise each year and I do have Sky's full package as well.

The problem with such an attitude is it encourages the BBC to be fat and sloppy with our money. What I object to is the statutory status of forced payment of the BBC Tax. The BBC stands for openness and fair play except when it comes to the BBC finances when it supports East German type State compulsion on payment to itself.

BBC advertise on their world service, although its mainly high end products like Rolex watches and high cost airlines. You wont see any for Flash cleaners or products like that. They also sell programs they make to other broadcasters around the world. I don't think Sky or ITV etc., would be very happy if BBC started advertising domestically.

BBC World has an odd providence - it's a bit like the equivalent radio service in that it isn't license fee funded. BBC World News is owned and operated by BBC Global News Ltd, a member of the BBC's commercial group of companies and is funded by subscription and advertising revenues, and not by the TV Licence Fee. It is not owned by BBC Worldwide. However unlike the radio equivalent this station isn't government funded as the UK government refused to extend their grant to a TV service in the 1990's.

The channel is not officially available as a stand-alone, full-time channel in the United Kingdom, on the grounds that it carries and is funded by advertising, although it can be easily received due to its 'free-to-air' status on many European satellite systems, including Astra and Hot Bird.

Are you related to Mark Thompson ? I think we should be told........

I'm quite happy for anyone who wants to pay for the BBC to continue to do so, but why should anyone who doesn't want to watch or listen to their output be compelled by law to do so ?

It's like having a Dyson in your house and paying a fee to Hoover for the privilege.

Everyone now has a digital TV so the technology is available to restrict access to those who have paid, but the BBC don't want to go this route because they know that they will lose massive chunks of their income to which they believe they are entitled. After all how would they continue to fund their lifestyles and mega payoffs ?

Re: BSkyB under pressure over charges to BBC

I can confirm I'm not related to Mark Thompson and I keenly support both free to air and subscription TV and I watch more subscription TV on Sky than the free to air channels, but I'm a supporter of both Sky and the BBC.
