Sky offers free broadband as battle with BT intensifies

Sky offers free broadband as battle with BT intensifies - Telegraph
Sky has launched a new deal offering free broadband with Sports TV packages, marking the latest salvo in its battle with BT.

Sky has launched a new deal offering free broadband with Sports TV packages, marking the latest salvo in its battle with BT.

It closely resembles an offer launched by BT last month.

The two companies have been competing to win new customers after it was announced BT Sport would be launched in August, promising broadband customers access to live sport free of charge, including 38 exclusive live Premier League games per season, 18 of which are 'top pick' matches.

Sky's response, announced today, is to offer both existing and new Sky Sports customers 12 months free Sky Broadband Unlimited (14.50 line rental) or six months free Sky Fibre Unlimited (20 a month thereafter, 14.50 line rental) when they switch their broadband to Sky Broadband Unlimited or upgrade to Sky Fibre Unlimited.

Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at switching website broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: "The market has been waiting for Sky to react to BT's sports TV launch with some kind of special offer and they haven't disappointed.

"On the face of it, BT and Sky are offering opposing deals - BT offer free sports content with your broadband, whilst Sky are offering free broadband with your sports content. However, customers will need to do their homework if they want to make the most of these offers and choose a package that suits their needs."

Mr. Baliszewski added: "Sky's lowest pricing for sports content may be higher than BT's, but it is important to remember the range of content that they offer. Sky still has the most comprehensive sports TV coverage on the market and for a lot of sports-mad fans that is the most important thing."

In comparison to BT showing 38 exclusive live Premier League games per season, Sky will be showing 116 exclusive live matches.

Despite BT and Sky offering these packages, both have announced an increase in their other prices, with BT upping their line rental on one of its saver products and Sky saying their TV prices are set to go up in September.

Re: Sky offers free broadband as battle with BT intensifies

Its not free, its 3.75 for 12 months.

For the fibre, do not really see that as a very good offer to either upgrade or switch. 20 a month for broadband is too high.
Its 60 off and you still do have to pay the 50 activation fee it seems, so a 10 saving.

I just talked with sky on this.
You have to get this offer by email or see it in your account to qualify. But they said if I was out of 12 months broadband contract (which I am) they would then give it t me, by forcing a new 12 month contract.
But, would still have to pay the 50 activation fee, so really would only be 10 off over 12 months. Also, you have to pay for a router at a few quid even if you have one.
I was told to ring back next week. Not sure if there was more to come, but he insisted.

So, if I am reading this right, there is nothing at all on offer for existing Sky broadband customers - even if the are Sky Sports subscribers. This offer only applies to people switching to Sky Broadband?

Sort of, I think (unless I've got it wrong - it does all seem a bit complicated!)

If, like me, you already have Sky Sports and Sky Fibre Broadband, there does not seem to be any change (unless - as lettice says - you are out of contract on the fibre broadband and can persuade them to give you the offer of 6 months Fibre at half-price, a saving of 60 over the year).

I was kind of hoping to see something radical in terms of a product/pricing revamp for fibre. But alas not...

out of contract on broadband unlimited, not fibre
Dont think this offer is offering anything to current fibre customers.

I have broadband unlimited and sky sports, no fibre yet.

Yes you need a degree in maths these days to work out all these sky deals.

Re: Sky offers free broadband as battle with BT intensifies

I'd hardly call this a battle....if it is a battle, Sky have well and truly lost......more like a ***** poor effort on Sky's part once again just providing offers to new customers whilst ONCE AGAIN their existing customers can go spin. This has made my mind up, if and when fibre goes live round here in September, Sky will not be getting any more of my business.
