I've resisted getting a PVR with Freeview as I like the interface on my Freeview TV and anything I need recording is usually repeated so much that I can catch them with the Sky+ box. I also don't want the ariel to go into the Freeview PVR box as I find it a faff.

It will probably be in the early hours of the morning.
I was thinking the same time that the boxes updated their EPGs so around 2am.

      .
Yes, mine's a Sony 40EX723. Not a hugely sophisticated recording system like our new EPG but it's HD and works perfectly fine as a backup to Sky when clashes loom .

The difference between being able to use the USB stick or drive and a dedicated PVR is really simple.

You can normally only record the channel that you are watching at the time. If you are out: Tough!

At least with a PVR you will have the ability to record perhaps two channels and set the timer for when you are on holiday, for example.

With the recent developments with the Sky HD EPG, provided that you wish to continue to subscribe to the Sky service, your recordings should be available for quite some time too. As it also allows you to remotely add something to the list of items to be recorded.

You can do that with the USB Sony recording system. using drives from 32Mb to 2Tb..

Cool, I hadn't realised this had been made possible.

It's available now, under the EPG! Why should 'catch up' do anything more than what it says on the box?

No reason at all, but this isn't just any old streamed catch-up on a computer or a smart telly - it's "super-whizzy all-singing and dancing" download catch-up to your STB from Sky. We're just believing in better!

True! I wonder if downloads are going to expire after 7 days or 30 days like on the iPlayer Desktop?

      Link to Catch-up FAQs:
      Catch Up TV FAQs

Somewhere in there, your question is answered!

Also, I have noticed recently during beta testing that BBC iPlayer downloads now say when they expire from On Demand (I think both on the blurb before you download and also on the info presented when you press the "i" button once it's been downloaded into the planner).

Yes, you get that on the other catch up channels. ITV Player and the Sky channels expire after 30 days.
