Sky HUB SR101 Hub To Be Released 18th October 2012

Unofficial: The following is from a PM just released, and as per usual is not the views of Sky.

They've released the date and pricing of the Sky Hub

      • Officially released October 18th
      • All new customers will receive one for free from then
      • Existing customers can buy one for 39 + 2.18 P&P until Mid January
      • From January the router will be 69 + 2.18 P&P

So, yeah they're marketing it as a premium product. However it's still only got 4 10/100 Ethernet ports, and single band 150mbps wireless. We checked it out and a comparable router costs less than half the price. We think perhaps someone has made a mistake with the price, but knowing Sky as we do we think they'll try to push that price.

Well I don't suppose it's cheap to get "Wossy" to advertise Sky+HD's new features is it?

The money's got to come from somewhere to pay for things like that you know...

Is it just me? I really don't get this 'hub'. What is actually different over the 'n' router?

They need to do 2 colours too. A nice shiny black should be done.

It needs gigabit proper dual band wireless etc and also USB for printer and file sharing.

Re: Sky HUB SR101 Hub To Be Released 18th October 2012

300mb WiFi and 1Gbit LAN should be the minimum specs of any new router now IMHO.

I can understand that someone internally will have seen the production costs for the Sky Hub, but I do think that asking customers to fork out over 70 for one is way too much. My response would be to either purchase a 2nd hand router off eBay or get my own non-Sky router.

It is a nice stable product. The WiFi is solid in my experience and that of most of the others who have one too, to the best of my knowledge.

There are other things missing though, such as USB ports, VPN support, dual band and descent parental controls.

I would buy one at the 39 price, but not the higher one for sure.

I had an online survey from sky about 3 months ago re this. No point in mentioning the questions asked as they were very varied to canvas opinion. Nonetheless they are looking in to it.

It would be very useful if the router could pick up on the Parental Controls side IMHO.

I use the 'Block Sites' feature on mine, and have done so on other routers too, to stop some naughty websites from loading their adverts. It really does make it a little safer to browse the Internet with multiple devices.

Every so often we get asked about blocking specific devices at different times of the day on this forum. Sadly none of the current Sky firmwares support a sensible approach to this.

Re: Sky HUB SR101 Hub To Be Released 18th October 2012

It's nice to see something that's not flimsy mind, the current 'N' router is cheap and plasticky which is in my opinion a massive downfall of it, and obviously no USB support. When I was with o2 for broadband they gave me a dainty wee box but it was firm and tough and also had a USB support and supported built in media hub capabilities - plug a USB stick into it and you can stream from it across the network.

For example, on my XBOX it automatically picked it up much like it picks up TVersity..
