It annoys me that I can call my friend who lives in Washington, DC USA for up to 60 minutes and that costs me nothing yet when calling a company that's actually only a few hundred yards away from my front door costs me an arm and a leg as it's an 0845 number!!!!

I just use my mobile phone now to dial 08 numbers now anyway as the nice people at T-Mobile include all 08 numbers in my monthly call allowance

Don't forget that sites such as Say No to 0870 exist. Often you can find these numbers listed there.

You may also be more upset to know that you can call your friend in Washington if he is on his mobile for up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds for nothing as well, yet it costs 7.66p per minute plus 13.1p to connect to a UK mobile phone in the evening (12.77p/min during the day).

Not all providers have that. It can work out cheaper to use the Sky land-line to call the 0845 numbers.

This post on the Sky Help Forum seems to confirm that Sky Talk Upfront Line Rental is no longer on offer:

Anus and elbow spring to mind. I signed up a couple of days ago, paid by card and the new monthly cost is already shown on my account, reflecting the reduction in cost of phone rental.

The cost has been unchanged for years, you can hardly expect it to remain the same forever. As it is a substantial change to the terms, you can leave without penalty, provided you inform them within 30 days after receiving the letter.

Pay a year upfront if possible and save a fair bit over the year. Upfront is 119.40 or 9.95 per month in reality saving 54.60 per year.
