There was rumour of a black one being in production, but never confirmed.

      Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

Thanks. So how does that differ from the last Sagem router I have ? What's the key differences in the spec / functionality?

I think I need a new router as my netgear V2 is so old now and falling apart the bits of plastic have come off to.
Also my broadband drops out some times.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

The main differences seem to be -

      • Built in PSU
      • Automatically and dynamically selects optimum wireless channel
      • 4 Simple LED icon indications (Power, Wireless, Internet, Sky+ HD)

The first will make the installation a bit tidier, but the down side is if they have not got it right all the heat is concentrated within the box. If it does not dissipate properly that could lead to long term problems.

The second will be a godsend if it works properly, no moe hunting around to find the best channel.

They seem to have dispensed with the port lights, which is a bit strange, most routers have these to indicate a connection at the proper speed.

It has been reported that the wireless signal strength has improved which probably means they are using a more up to date wireless chip, with maybe a better aerial arrangement.

There does not seem to be much difference between it and the older router, only time will tell if it is any better. Sky's 3 replacement routers for their original DG834GT were not a patch on it. Lets hope this one is a lot better.

Mine seems to run quite cool, auto switches the wireless channel now and again - usually swapping between channels 6 & 11 - without me doing anything and the port lights are on the back (2 per port, one orange and one green as described by Newsreader earlier). And, unlike the 2504n, the wifi doesn't drain the battery on my iPhone 3GS! Pity it isn't better spec'd than it is though.

the port lights are on the back
That's useful, if you have a mirror behind it.

A mirror on a stick IS quite useful. Especially when pointing the head torch into dark corners behind the TV to do some "cable re-engineering"...

To be honest, at first I thought it was a bit weird having the port lights on the back - but now I don't really miss seeing them at all.

You hardly need to see them anyway, as the tinternet wouldn't work if they weren't connected.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

Considering that you can hardly see the LEDs on the Sagem 2504N to know what they are doing.

Personally I do like to see the LEDs flashing to indicate activity, but apparently more people just prefer to know that they indicate something is working and for them not to flash on the front.

The orange LAN Port LEDs flash on the rear and it is possible to see the flashing on the cable which is pugged into the port if you place the router at a slight angle to how you are sitting.

The only time the LEDs on the front blink or change colour are when the Sky Hub is...

      • Performing a Firmware update (Power LED goes orange & blinks)
      • Reconnecting to the Internet (Internet LED goes orange and blinks)
      • WiFi is establishing itself (WiFi LED blinks)
      • Sky+ HD STB is download some content from the On Demand section or some other Sky+ HD service is going through the Sky Hub (perhaps in the future?)

To be fair I have a Switch which gives me most of the information I got before, but I do miss the WiFi LED flashing to indicate traffic. I guess with more and more WiFi devices enabled now, it makes this a little pointless as it would likely be flashing all the time in some homes.

As for the WiFi chip, it is more or less the same as in the Sagem 2504N. The Sagem 2504N version has built in Bluetooth support, which isn't used, whilst the Sky Hub version doesn't have Bluetooth support available.
