If it made a major difference over the bog standard sky router then sky would issue it to everyone without charge.

If it only makes a 'cosmetic' difference then sky will expect customers to pay for it.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

Sky did the same thing with the 2504n though, and still are doing. The 2504n was / is a good router, for the average user. Maybe not for those that want extra features etc but for the masses it is great.

I presume the new router is geared up for the VOD side of things, so will be even more popular in the future.

Its hard t osay if it is any better though without trying it for a bit to compare. But at 40 I think its worth a punt.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

I've had no issues with streaming video off the Internet with this router. Of course it I stream BBC iPlayer content to my TV or HT then I need to slow the torrents down as they'll suck all my bandwidth otherwise.

I tend to watch most video content on my TV though, rather than my Laptop.

However the WiFi has been good and I've had no issues with that side of things. Of course, like the 2504N you need a WiFi adaptor that is capable of supporting the full 144mb/s on a single channel to truly benefit for heavier work, but 72mb/s should be fine for most video content.

Well I would rather be spending 40 on a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND instead while I wait until I can convince the wife why we need to spend 120 on a Billion.

While I'm sure the hub improves in some areas over the 2504n I remain to be convinced on the quality and capability of any Sky router when more than 3 things want to access the internet at any one time. Last night being a case in point when a laptop and 3 phones were all using it my network slowed to a crawl!

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

Compared to other routers (i.e. from Billion, Netgear, TP-Link, Edimax, etc.) the firmware is locked down. This is just as much the same as it has been for all the other Sky routers. So there is no change in this respect.

For those who are happy to just use a router supplied by Sky, the Sky Hub SR101 is far better than all the previous Sky routers IMHO.

To qualify the above statement comparing other Sky routers, I have personally used the Netgear DG934G & Sagem 2304n in my own home. I have also used the Sagem 2504 at a friend's home. I have also read the comparison reports from those who have been using the Sagem 2504N.

In terms of the long-term reliability, of course I cannot comment on this side of things. Whilst I have been using it for a few months now, long-term for me means a few years.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

When I use the BBC iPlayer on my PS3, all programs buffer up every few mins (currently I have a SKY branded Netgear DG834GT). They're unwatchable as it's so annoying. It is only 2 rooms away.

Is the new SR101 likely to improve the situation?

If it is buffering then it is probably the download speed which is too low, so it does not matter how far you are from the router. Post a request for help in the Broadband Help section and include your router stats. - How to get your Sky Router statistics
