    Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

This is a discussion on Sky's New Router / HUB SR101 within the Sky news and announcements forums, part of the SkyUser Announcements category; It should support 300Mbps. The spec sheet shows 40mhz operation in 2.4ghz with coexistence mechanisms. 40mhz uses 300 whereas the ...

It should support 300Mbps. The spec sheet shows 40mhz operation in 2.4ghz with coexistence mechanisms.

40mhz uses 300 whereas the current sky router uses 20mhz.

Also I live in a built up area, there are 2 virginmedia connections that I can see. All running at 300Mbps all on channel 6 and 10. So perhaps these things can coexist. I get 13 wifi networks when I scan, yet these run 300Mbps happily.

5ghz wise. Have any of you that want it actually tried it? The range is god awful. I tried it with a belkin and netgear router, WNDR3700 I think? It was 129 router anyway, it barely got through two walls on 5ghz. When it went through 1 wall the 2.4ghz connection rate and throughput was higher.

The only time 5ghz was better was RIGHT next to the router.

It may well show 300Mbit/s but unless the RF conditions are good the actual throughput probably won't be much faster.

5Ghz has plenty of clear channels but as you notice 5ghz doesn't pass though solid objects (such as walls) nearly as well as 2.4ghz does.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

I have been using the 5GHz channels for around a year now (although for the past couple of months I have been using the new Sky Hub). So yes I am familiar with it.

This really depends on the structure of your property and how many competing WiFi devices are using the same channels near you. As dragon2611 correctly points out the 5GHz signal doesn't pass as well though wall as the 2.4GHz signal. However if you consider the amount of traffic on a single 2.4GHz channel when you have in excess of 60 routers nearby, compared to very few 5GHz routers, if any, and a greater range of available channels to use as well, then you begin to understand the attraction of the frequency.

A couple of other important facts regarding the 5GHz channels:

      • Because there is more frequency bandwidth, some routers can now work at 1.3Gbit/s and faster speeds are possible
      • The router needs to monitor the channels which it is using in case it conflicts with a local RADAR installation (at least for channels 52 and above)

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

It looks like Sky are shipping the new Hub out now, here's another report of someone receiving it.

However all is not good. I wanted to use my own router and had researched how to hack my rt n-16 running tomato to let it connect to the Sky system. For this I needed my sky router username/password which they obfuscate. Relatively easy to obtain from the Sagem router which I expected to receive however they have sent me their very latest Hub.

That article does highlight one issue which I have still to confirm: Whether the Password extraction works and the information which DD-WRT will require from the Hub if it does.

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

As this is reputed to be an 'in house' product and not related to any of the previous routers, I have to doubt that any of the existing methods of obtaining the password will work. Maybe someone can have a look at the configuration settings and see if it is mentioned there?

Great let us know how it performs etc

For those asking about the network speeds etc, it has

4 x 100mb Ports (no Gigabit connectivity unfortunately) so a few people maybe slightly disappointed.

I believe there will be some some more specs added to the thread later on today, unless Kymru would like to post the rundown, seems as you have actually got one?

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

      Hello folks!

New here, but just had sky fiber installed with one of these new hubs. From the looks of it its only running single channel wireless N so wireless speed is quite restricted (I get a 65mbps connection upstairs where with my virgin "super"hub I got 270ish). If anyone has any questions about the router or anything please feel free to ask and ill try to answer!

      Cheers

      Dave J

      Re: Sky's New Router / HUB SR101

Is this the first time you have had Sky Broadband?

Overall, what do you think of the Hub?
