Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

The takeover buzz around TalkTalk has been on the rise recently.

Rumours recently spread across the Square Mile that the broadband provider could be attracting the attentions of a potential suitor from the Continent but today there was talk a bid could come from nearer to home.

BSkyB will have been shocked last month by BT’s decision to splash out 738 million to show 38 Premier League games a season, and the answer for the satellite broadcaster (down 0.5p to 687.8p), according to Liberum Capital’s Lawrence Sugarman, could be for it to make a play for TalkTalk.

“We believe Sky is keen to build on its broadband position,” said the analyst, who added an approach “could be an ideal way to launch a response” to BT’s lavish spending.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

It would most certainly be very interesting as TalkTalk also go on about their TV service through the Internet as well.

With such services and a large customer base I am sure that the Government will want it checked over.

TalkTalk are still ranking the worse for customer services, where as in the latest poll on Thinkbroadband, Sky were in 1st place. In many way this could certainly be a good think for ex-Tiscalli and TalkTalk customers if this did go through. I would expect the pressure to be on Sky to resolve the many issues that TalkTalk has had to combat, including a very poor IT system for record keeping that Tiscalli once had, although this should have been resolved by now.

thinkbroadband :: TalkTalk still tops Ofcom broadband complaints chart

It would certainly be interesting if this does go through.

It might just be a move to get Sky's market price back up.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

With around 4 million broadband subscribers on each service, the resulting merger would exceed BT's customer base.

I would certainly hope that Sky's engineers would be able to upgrade TalkTalk's backhaul to properly support an unlimited package too.

I would hope it does not go ahead. Taking out the biggest competitor is not a good thing for consumers.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

BT and Virgin each currently have a large broadband customer base. Sure TalkTalk and Sky are the largest LLU providers and whilst there would be some telephone exchanges who currently only have one or the other provider, there are many which have both.

It you consider the potential for further increases in customer share, the combined force would be able to negotiate from a much stronger position with regards to getting a better price from BTO. They would quite rightly be able to say they as a customer Sky is larger than BT Retail and should be entitled to better service and prices. I would trust that this would benefit the customers and the country as a whole.

Certainly BT PLC should be concerned.

O2 & Be would be concerned, as the only other major LLU provider. Sure there are others and they offer a good service, but it would take them a long time to chip away at the other providers.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

Bt and Virgin need challenging on the fibre and correct definition of unlimited/unrestricted, far too long these have concentrated on TV services, not that I subscribe to any TV service these days, however I always found SKY to be the most professional at it, I too believe BT may have scored a home goal with recent viewing rights gain, however they very likely offset this with BDUK money!. This focused approach on TV services at the expense of much sooner deployment of 25+Mbps hopefully this will be a wakeup call or the start to get the UK fully connected.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

I hope Sky do buy TalkTalk, its about time TT's customers get some decent customer service, decent infrastructure and decent billing etc

I bet a tenner BT are bricking it in case it is true.

Good on Sky, is what I say, they invested, they innovated, and are now reaping the rewards.

Re: Rumour - Sky to buy TalkTalk?

I hope they dont as a short term solution would be to link the TalkTalk DSLAM's into the existing sky + easynet backhaul which would put alot more stress on it

In the same manner that sky dslam's route certain traffic through the easynet core network
In the long term though sky would have to upgrade the core network
