It is possible Sky will just supply a VDSL modem* and leave the provision of a router to the user. I think this would suit most users. I believe the new Sky router has a WAN port which would allow it to be used with a VDSL modem, but who would want to be tied to the Sky router if it can be avoided?

I've actually been quite happy with my Sky router. It's small and neat but has a good signal and it's simple to setup with decent security options. The only negative points I've found is that the control panel seems doesn't always behave as expected on the Mac with Safari.

I have to say I've never had any real problems either - well I've been through a few over the years, but Sky has always replaced them for me and they do the job - and usually the router has been replaced as part of a process to sort greater problems.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

I know i asked this before but just been speaking with a friend and it confused me lol. Firstly generally how long before an exchange goes live will any FTTx checker display availablity or a message like "available by ......"?

Also oddly and maybe not related, if i put my number into the wholesale checker i get the normal message about predicted speeds and if i wanted to place an order ect but nothing about FTTx which is due to the exchange by March, but if a friend pops his number in BT Wholesale it has no information on the line, only thing i can think of is i use my own router and he is on MER.

      Again just curious lol

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

I too have been happy with the sky router I use. I realise I could have sync'd slightly better with a better router but as my line could do with replacing (overhead wires) I get slight noise which means I cannot received the 14mb I should get (it will sync but due to errors keeps dropping) so im happy with 10mb.

I AM hoping that when sky offer fibre they will replace the wire that goes down my house to the new vdsl faceplace & my connection should get alot nicer.

BT predict me 27mb odd down and 10mb odd up.

      Come on sky
