Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

75Mb/s d/l with 20Mb/s u/l sounds an inviting jump from a 20Mb/s connection. Understandably for anyone who currently has less than 7Mb/s connection, it sounds even more inviting.

I would love a 1Gbit connection even more though

However, even if Sky were to launch in June, I would still have to wait until the end of the year to get FTTC as my exchange is due to be enabled "some time during 2012", with no firm date. As for when the street box near me gets enabled is anyone's guess.

The next thing to concern me is whether or not we can get away with using our own routers on the Fibre connection. I hope that Sky hasn't bodged the log in process, like they have with MER, in order to prevent this from happening.

Knowing what I do about ADSL, for example, I cannot see any practical reason for preventing people from using their own router.

it is nice to jump from 20 Meg to 40 or 80 Meg but going to a 1gb line would be very expensive to install especially the lines they would cost a bomb for the company's to deploy.

What I am referring to is BTO's announcement that they are increasing the FTTC speeds from 40 to 80 for everyone.

Not late this year or next year. They are looking to do it around March.

I am delighted of course - just suspicious of free meals

Not so much interested in upload speeds.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Meteosat. With BT's history of snooping on their customers traffic or spying on their networks, I'm sure everything will be just fine.
