I said yes because I would have happily stayed with sky and paid that had fibre been available.

Until sky makes any formal announcements, your guess is as good as mine.

I wonder if Sky when they do it will use the 17a profile? My line was switched to the 17a profile this morning for when BT for 80/20 and the stats are quite pleasing as my line is capable of well over 100Mbit.

I think Sky laying their own fibre is some way off yet, certainly I haven't heard anything that would suggest otherwise.

As you may know, they are doing the joint fttp trial with talk talk, and I think that's as far as it goes for the moment. Seems they are just looking into the viability of it. Sky having their own fttp network has pretty big ramifications for tv as it could easily make satellites obsolete.

Pretty sure the upcoming fibre product will be bt based, makes sense. It's the safest option, and Sky are clearly not that enthusiastic about jumping both feet into fibre broadband.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

Personally I think that we are many decades away from ditching Satellite TV in favour of Fibre.

Having the option of both cable and satellite as we do at present allows new builds to have a dish installed, should it be wanted, and not have to wait months or years for a company to debate whether or not to lay a fibre system to their home.

There are also many blocks of flats and residential homes who will not have cable installed because the owners do not wish it.

I am also aware of some areas where cable services have been promised and never installed, despite contracts specifying dates and penalties.

So for these, and other reasons, I personally would not wish Sky to ditch their satellite service for a long time yet.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

Openreach have today released the names of a further 178 exchanges to be upgraded to FTTC (some also getting FTTP) - these are due to be enabled by theend of 2012. Finally, my exchange (Widnes) is on the list of exchanges to be upgraded.

I look forward to finally having broadband faster than 2mb download & I'm hopeful that Sky will be offering a fibre product by the time my exchange is enabled.
