Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

With the introduction of streaming video content, people are using more and more data each month. I cross posted an article from broadband Genie earlier this month, hence the figure of 17GB (sorry not 17MB).

Average Brit uses 17GB of home broadband data per month

More and more are watching any of the video on demand services from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or 5 and much of this is integrated into their TVs or some device directly connected to their TV.

If I had an account with one of the various on-line video companies, I know I could stream video content from them too. The prediction is that it is going to continue to rise too.

...data use had risen seven-fold in just the past five years...
I also suspect that as more places which have until now had rubbish broadband connections are hooked up to a proper ADSL or FTTC connection, then this consumption rate will continue to rise.

Some years back M$ suggested that we should run an on-line version of it's software. Whilst not run by M$ at present, there are now some Laptops which work solely over the Internet. All your data & the software are on-line. This too is adding to our consumption and reliance of the Internet.

As for Sky building a larger infrastructure, I hope that this is the case. Certainly their current backhaul is working well on the whole. There were some issues after last Christmas for about 3 months, but things seem to be fine at present.

A Fibre system will place that backhaul under considerable more pressure than it is now, so it is important to ensure that this is in place. I would hate to see Sky's network slowed down on purpose because the backhaul could not cope.

They have also been installing lots more of their equipment in various telephone exchanges across the country. Since this equipment can be used for both Copper & Fibre based broadband, it is not money wasted.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Remember that is the average figure. There will be plenty who hardly do anything on-line, whilst many others will continue to download lots.

Well, now I have iPlayer 720p streams running smooth as silk via XBMC and now that most Sky Movies are available in HD via Anytime+, I am doing a lot more streaming than was the case only a few months ago.

I'm sure as connected TVs and set-top boxes become more standard, demand for fast broadband will increase rapidly.

We'll have to see if he gives an indication tomorrow as to how much money will go towards broadband. It's pretty much a given it will go towards the final third and not the ones that can currently get FTTC/P, so nothing amazing.

I think 10 billion or more should go to broadband like and whatever's left should go on roads for potholes lol

I was under the impression the money I invest for my retirement was for just that, not to bail out unscrupulous bankers or pay for someone else's broadband.
