Thing is even if Sky do launch people seem to be expecting it to cost 7.50 plus an extra tenner and there isnt a cat in hells chance of that. They can charge 7.50 cos it is on their own gear and they taking money for other products, FTTC is going to have to be bought off BT Wholesale (unless Sky have a few billion laying around to knock up their own network) so they are going to have to charge accordingly.

Glad i jumped ship, yeah it is an 18 month contract but in 18 months it will all be settled and the prices will have come down, i could have been waiting for another 6 months on Sky only to be told it is going to be the same price as BT anyway, who knows.

They would be idiots if they did, they would be risking their job and the ability to post on the forum.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

What I'd like to see Sky do if they are going to offer FTTC (which surely they will have to at some point, like it or not). Move 'everyone' that wants it onto a FTTC network. Offer a 'pay what you do now' basic package, with cost of new router and one-off installation charge, and throttle it to the 20meg everyone ought to be able to get (effectively giving them the full 'upto' 20meg they pay for now). Then do a second option of 'x' amount per month extra to unleash the full 'upto' 40meg speed, that FTTC is capable of.

On a side not, just found out I could have FTTC right now from a company based in Sheffield (local to me), for 22.50 per month (10 more than I currently pay with sky), unlimited downloads, no throttle, one off cost of router and installation. I'd like to stick with Sky, but this is tempting.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

I think the problem is that everyone using FTTC at the moment are either BT or a BT reseller. Becoming a BT reseller would wreck Sky's grand plan to get everyone on to the SVBN. They need some way to take over the fibre line in the cabinet and connect it direct to their exchange equipment. BT may not like this and it may not be technically possible.
