Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

I had a reply from their CS yesterday. Basically it is saying that sky at some point probably will install their own fibre network. As this most likely will take a while, and the possibility excists that you live in an un-economical area, some people will never get sky fibre optic! And the lucky ones won't see it until at least end 2012 - 2013 (or longer).

So today I ordered infinity, install date 27/10. By the time the 18 month contract is over, Sky will hopefully have fibre broadband on offer, or at least working on it!

To the people who are waiting for Sky, don't wait too long as when the cabinets in your street are full, then you are stuck!!

      Thank you for that Darkwing.

I would hope that Sky will make some kind of formal announcement soon.

I know that Sky has been negotiating with BTO in order to gain access to the existing infrastructure (telegraph poles, cabinets, etc.) so it isn't unexpected. If they do take this route though, then I see it as a bad choice if they do not intend to use BTO's existing Fibre network.

However Sky does have some serious money behind it to finance this operation, so perhaps this is something that they can afford to do.

At least it isn't Tesco doing this with all their billions of profits over the past few years.

The installers will probably have a hard time fighting off the flying pigs.

They have, or at least rent the fibre network, it is the local loop that needs the fibre and until Sky find some way of using the FTTC already in place or being installed, they are going to haemorrhage subscribers.

      Below something funny regarding the CS;

      Hi Rene
      Customer Account Number: xxxxxxxxxxxx
Thank you for your email about the MAC.
As you are on Sky Voice and Broadband Network we do not send out a MAC as you will need to get a new phone line as well as broadband supplier.
Once you have arranged for the new supplier to supply you with a new telephone line the supplier can also set broadband at same time. This allows you to change over smoothly without losing any service.
I understand that you are unable to make the payment right away, therefore I'd request you to please contact our Customer Services team on 08442 41 41 41, where one of our advisors may guide you with a payment plan if required.
      Thanks

Hi, I would like to request a MAC code. Thanks Rene

He understands from my 11 word sentence that I can't make a (which) payment???

Seems to me they copy/paste replies, but in this case he pasted it into the wrong email

They are very good at frightening people too, you do not need a new phone line, you already have one. The implication of the email is that you need to get a new line installed this is incorrect.

I am not sure about needing a MAC for BTI, I doubt if it is necessary, but you would have to confirm this with BT. If you don't have a MAC you would normally have to pay a connection charge, but you will have to pay one anyway with Infinity.

BT waives the connection charge. Even when you request a second line to be installed. So in the worst case scenario I could have BT infinity on 1 line, and Sky on the other without having to pay any connection charges

That is probably the best way to go. The only problem is if you want to keep your phone number. You would not be able to do that with a second line.
