Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

Some staff from Sky have been placed on a Fibre product. From what I can recall the trials were initially in Glasgow and Muswell Hill (North London).

I also believe that some others have been added to the trials.

However I have not seen anything posted of this forum to update us on the progress of these trials. They should have sufficient data to work out the product range and ensure that the backhaul can cope with increase in traffic.

Somebody on another forum said that Be had promised FTTC products in 2010.

I suppose with a user base of 80,000 for Be and 800,000 for O2, they need something to keep waving in front of their customers to stop them leaving.

Hmmm ... despite an updated date of September this year for our exchange, it is now showing as "FTTC Available in some areas" - and I have noticed a marked increase in activity of both Openreach and what I assume are contracted out cable vans in the local area.

Edit ... according to BT my area isn't due to be upgraded for the next 6 months, yet their map shows my exchange will be upgraded around 30th September 2011 .. very odd

Not sure if it's known on this thread as I haven't read all of it, but starting last month, Sky SNS have started deploying their equipment for fibre into some exchanges so far. I always heard rumours that they'd release an announcement come September time, but as I say, just a rumour that I heard.

That's good news and about time too.

Now when is my local exchange going to be upgraded by BTO?

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

The exchanges are the very start of the process.

The cabinets are the important part.

It can take from 8-12 weeks from ground to be cleared to get all the work done and then the BTW line checker will say if you can order it or not.

Until a definate date goes into the line checker then it doesn't matter as BTW can only make a best geuss anyways and they seemed to have stopped putting in placeholder dates in some cases as that upset people more when they kept on changing.

Our Exchange went live in March yet not all the areas have even have cab works started yet and I can't find anybody who can actually order it yet.

I do appreciate this. I was having a friendly joke (hence the ).

I am also very aware from reading various comments that not every area within reach of the exchange is being enabled for Fibre at present.

From what I understand, you'll be just fine.

My understanding is that if Sky connect you up to a Fibre connection, this will take you to the local exchange and from there you would be put through to Sky's LLU equipment. This would mean that you will still be on Sky's backhaul and you would have a fast connection from the exchange to your home.

Perhaps someone in the know can confirm this?

What is not known at this stage is:

      • the pricing structure
      • whether there will be different service levels/prices for those who do not have Sky equipment in the local exchange
      • which router Sky will be supplying
      • what T&Cs will apply
      • whether Sky will be selling FTTC only or will they sell FTTP as well
      • whether it will be limited to specific areas or anywhere that has Fibre
