Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

Well it looks like Sky are loosing the publicity battle.

O2 & BE have announced that they will definitely launch 'Fibre' based products this year.

thinkbroadband :: O2 and BE to launch fibre broadband products this year

The blogs on their respective sites are worded carefully. Neither are giving away dates, prices & product structure, three key elements to help judge whether you want to take up their product or move to another supplier.

      From the O2 blog:
Right now though it is about letting you know we have been listening and will be doing our best to provide something that will truly enhance your online experience.
In other words, "we've kept quiet long enough and have lost many customers in the process".

      From the Be Blog:
So our plans for fibre have to be something unlimited and unshaped too, otherwise it simply defeats the object of having greater speed. Itís great to be told you could get speeds up to some high level, but with traffic management it is unlikely youíll get it for long. We are unlikely to be the cheapest in the market but we are determined to be the best.
In other words: Woohoo!!!! Provided you are prepared to pay for it.

They still have problems though, 8 months on and they still haven't sorted out their random packet loss for certain users.

It may improve once Telephonica put their new network in but now lots of people are still complaining.

Hearing good things from a couple of colleagues on the staff trial. Can't wait until BT do my exchange.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband

I purposefully phrased things carefully in the above report of O2 & Be taking up Fibre based broadband products.

The blogs only confirm that they should be getting their Fibre products launched later this year. It left the doors open for them to launch early next year.

They do not confirm an actual date, the structure or pricing of the product range.

It was suggested early this year on this forum that Sky may launch their Fibre based products in September. If this is the case, it might be all hush-hush until the launch date.

From what I have learnt, Sky likes to keep their lips super-glued until nearer the time. for example the Sagem 2304n wasn't announced, it just appeared.

Didn't I read that Sky Staff were trialling FTTC connections in some areas? Nothing seems to have come of their appeal to the public for volunteers to trial their system.
