Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

I received an e-mail yesterday stating that a usage tool will be available soon (November 2009 according to the updated usage policy)...

      "Hi Christopher

Understanding what broadband usage is can be a little confusing because you can't see it or feel it, but everything you do online takes up some of your usage allowance. Your Sky Broadband Everyday has a 10GB allowance, which is ideal for regular browsing and downloading. But if you're doing more on the internet like downloading music, watching TV online and sharing photos with family and friends, you may find your usage allowance isn't enough.

We've updated our usage policies (Sky.com - Sky Products>Broadband>Terms and Conditions>Usage Policies) to make it clearer how the policies may affect you. But however you use the internet, you can be sure that in Sky network areas, we don't slow our broadband speed down at peak times - unlike other providers. If you have any questions about your Sky Broadband usage, you'll find answers in the FAQ (Sky.com - Sky Help Centre>Product Help) section on our website.

Keeping you up-to-date on your usage

To help you manage and keep track of your usage allowance, we'll email you to let you know if you go over your 10GB monthly allowance. We've also developed a handy online tool, which will allow you to track your internet usage online yourself, and we'll be writing to tell you more about this soon.

We'll start contacting you by email if you go over your usage allowance, once to let you know you've gone over your allowance, and then again to let you know you're close to it in any subsequent month. If you use more than your allowance twice within a 6-month period we'll automatically upgrade you to Sky Broadband Unlimited, which gives you truly unlimited usage and will be more suitable for the way you use the internet.

To help us to keep in touch about your usage, please give us your preferred email address. To do this, just click on the link below and this will take you through to MySky (https://mysky.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/mysky) where you can manage your account and services online. You'll need your username to sign in, which is <deleted> and your password. If you've forgotten your password, just follow the simple instructions on screen."

The usage policy is worth a look, as it confirms other points made earlier about not putting restrictions on the connection if you go over the usage cap and auto-upgrading if you go over twice in 6 months.

I had this e-mail also yesterday, I have no idea what my usage is, we don't download films, but do listen to music, upload photos to facebook etc, watch i player and some online gaming (via Wii) Adding e-mails and general browsing we might get near to 10gb, if so I'll review my options. O2/Be are pricy as we don't have an O2 phone, and there would be no point getting one as we have a very poor O2 signal at home. Orange anf Vodafone both have good coverage. Our exchange has other ISP's enabled for LLU, but as Sky have been by far the best ISP we have had, I'd be reluctant to change, and would probably stump up the extra £5. I'm also astonished that Sky didn't undertake thisbefore.

I wonder if they could send out emails with our usage on, it could be done daily, weekly or monthly depending on what the person wants.

Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

      An absolute joke.

How can they justify reducing my monthly allowance..... but I still have to pay the same £5. I can see the point of an allowance, but I had 30Gig on Tiscali and that was 2 years ago!!! and they are rubbish.

Its another way of money making, but forcing people onto a higher package.

I'll def go over my allowance by the time I download a couple of PS3 demos, albums on itunes etc etc.

      Bad mve sky, i'm ofski

Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

The reduction of the usage is ludicrous imo

However since day 1 of this forum, Sky have never ever enforced any caps. Times have changed, and to be honest, expected after 3 years of doing so.

Yes times change, usage is just going to increase, and I feel Sky have made a grave error on this. However, a lot of people will just upgrade to Max (now called Unlimited) as it is a lot less hassle than changing ISP.

Rumours are rife at the moment, which we haven't published, but VOD PDL etc are all set to make an appearance. So for the £10 / £15 a month that you would be paying, one of the rumours is that you will get the equivalent of Sky Anytime on the TV on your PC for no extra charge.

What annoys me the most is the way this was done. But I guess Sky have to now actually make a differentiation between their packages, which of course was never there before. ie You could download as much as you wanted on Base, Mid or Max.

Vodaphone and O2 have signed a network sharing deal which should be in place by Xmas.

This means that o2 and Vodaphone customers can use each others towers when it goes live.

This is what happens in the USA, it was really wierd going over a city and having the phone change provider to the strongest signal it could find.

Anyways I now pay £7.34 a month and if I stayed with Sky it would have been £15 by now.

Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

If I'm reading the prices right, O2 is no cheaper than Sky (for me anyway) as I have Sky Talk and Line rental. If quality were an issue it might make it attractive, but I am one of the lucky ones who has had a good service with no major issues. I know that downloads are unlimited, but factoring in the cost and aggravation of moving mobiles plus broadband I can't see the benefit for me.

Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

The truth is sky do not care what there loyal customers think. Below is acopy of a letter I sent them recorder delivery on the 2nd July. They have never answered it

      For attention of Managing Director

      Dear Sir

The leaflet you are now sending out to customers about changes you are making to Sky broadband states.
Sky broadband now even better, all for the same low price. Who do you think you are kidding? It should read now even worse for the same price.

Most people will not see any increase in speed what so ever, as there are other factors involved that you have No control over. You have cut the usage allowance by 75% on the mid package. If that’s an average of what people use why impose a cut from 40g to 10g, as it serves no purpose. The real reason is a ploy to get people to switch to Unlimited and nothing else. You recently imposed a 100% increase on broadband customers unless they took their phone calls with you, yet another ploy.
Instead of informing customers in a proper letter about these changes you have chosen to send out a leaflet along with a load of other advertising buff, which many will just bin without even reading them. Yet another ploy I wouldn’t be surprised so that new customers will miss the get out clause date.

I challenge you to prove to me how I as a mid customer am going to see any improvement in my broadband package, when in fact the opposite is true. What is going to be your next ploy I wonder? Try to get customers to switch their phone line to sky or maybe unlimited will become limited. Sky sign people up with these deals and then change the goal posts. Hardly fair I think.

Re: Sky Broadband Usage On MySky?

I received in the post today a printed letter from Sky entitled "Your broadband usage allowance explained." With it was a leaflet, "Your simple[sic] guide to Sky Broadband usage."
It sets out in detail what they will be doing from now on and includes details on a "new handy online tool." A monthly usage monitor...!!! So go to:-
My Sky - Broadband - Usage tools...???
Hang on a minute? Where is it? I can't find it?..yet??
Is this something Sky is developing or has Skyuser got a hand in it? And are Sky just being a bit previous..??
      Old MIG15 pilot.
