When did you sign up to Sky?

As Sky are 20 years old, we would like to know when you actually signed up to Sky, and if you can remember the make and model of your Sky equipment.

Have you been with Sky since the very beginning?

      How much were your subs?

      What equipment did you have?

Let us know in this thread.

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

I joined about 92 or 93 when i first started work (folks wouldn't pay for sky).

Got a BT box which was a clone of the ??? box (cant remember the ??? these days).

Think i was paying about 18ish.

The change to Sky Digi from analogue was amazing and then sky+ just changes the whole way you watch tv.

Now on HD and that is great, with cheap BB to boot!

Sky is expensive, very expensive, but worth every penny in my mind.

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

I originally signed up when the subs were 12 a month, probably 1990 ish and with an Amstrad box and huge dish for 199 from Currys.

I used to have the dish on a stand and length of cable, out in the back garden, as I lived in rented property and weren't allowed to put it on the wall.

It was a pain in the neck trying to get a picture every day, but worth it.

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

First signed up 1992, receiver BT 250 (something) dish 60cm Lenson Heath (still in use now with quid lnb.for Sky Digital) not sure what the subscription was. I do remember the receiver used to get as hot as hell, and Videocript decoders used to produce a lot of patterning on low UHF channels if you were not careful!! Last analogue receiver was a Pace MS100 (the one that looked like bathroom scales) does anyone remember fiddling the decoder scart socket so you could watch the German MTV channel?

      my memours
i remember 1999 when we moved into a new house, we had the old veiwing card, simpsons on autoview and a cardboard box not sure what make but it was ugly
we were on month-by-month and when she said to cancel they TOOK our equip, but i kept the remote

then signed up again got a thompson silver box, plain but stylish,
upgraded to sky+ got a pace V1 - useless, then canceled

then signed up again here at 'the villa' got sky std, swaped for the V1
ordered multiroom with sky+ for 49 (this was one of the things that made me stick here - sorry)
V1 blew up, put std back
Upgraded to sky+hd - pace, broke, got a sammmy

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

Joined in 1992, bought a system from John Lewis (in the Sale) and fitted it myself. It included a Ferguson STB and a 60cm dish. Analogue Astra also allowed viewing of lots of German channels in the days before EPG's. I quickly discovered that placing the dish on a chair in the dining room (by the patio door and pointing southwards) allowed reception behind glass. Later went to a Pace 900 before we went digital - I'm now on a Thomson HD PVR.

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

I think it was about 1995 for me, can't remember much about it other than the bloke wanted to charge me 60 or there about's to run a wire from the back on the old sky box to a second television.

I think I subscribed because I was off work recovering from an operation and needed something to watch as daytime TV was rubbish, pretty much as it is today.

same here I had a amstrad srx100 16 channel before encription. I was one of the so called sky pioneers who were the first to get the videocript decoder for sky movies. Wasnt it 9.95 a month?

Re: When did you sign up to Sky?

Can't remember when it was now, but it was a few years before digital. We got digital within weeks of it being available. When we got digital we ran analogue and digital side by side for a while 'cos the TdF was on Eurosport analogue only, so wasn't on digital.
Costs - everything other than Sport was about ??? I'm buggered if I can remember!

PS : I vaguely remember having some gadget in the feed to the analogue box that 'stepped down' out of range frequencies so that they could be seen on the (Pace?) box!

Can't call me a Luddite now!
