Re: Exclusive: Sky+3D on its way?

I suppose its not that hard to do really. I used to have a 3d vision system for my PC. It was awesome. Playing Half-life where you actually saw your crowbar move away from you, or call of duty when you gun-butted someone. It was beautiful tbh.

But it would be a logistic nightmare for TV. It would effectivly mean that they would send the same image twice to your screen, one just offset by a couple of millimetres, and as someone pointed out, you would need special glasses to see it properly. And even then, the glasses may need some sort of electronic filter, as was the case with the PC system.

Its a good idea, but could be a bit out of reach for us right now.

BTW, if your interested in the PC thing, here is the Linky

No the glasses don't need any electronic filter, I have 2 pairs of these glasses when I had to go and do a focus group on Beowulf in 3d prior to it's cimema launch and we were allowed to keep them for "future use".

The system was developed by Kodak and it relies on using differently orientated polaroid lenses in each eye, when I saw beowulf you really couldn't even see the split images if you took the glasses off.

I wonder if Sky want to show Beowulf in 3d and on the HD box they have a lot more resolution to play with and the split images can be a lot closer together to minimise any split screen effect.

Although getting the glasses out to everybody could be a logistical nightmare if it is going to be just for 1 film.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Re: Exclusive: Sky+3D on its way?

In a cinema you can project the images using polarised light. This is what is reflected back into your eye and so can be filtered with polaroid glasses.

You can't do that with a standard CRT, plasma or LCD so yes, I think you would need some form of electronic filtering - or good old fashioned colour shift (anaglyph) glasses. Or have a special 3D TV such as that proposed by Philips, Samsung and Mitsubishi.

Re: Exclusive: Sky+3D on its way?

From what I have heard, Sky used a standard Sky+HD box and a Sony 46" screen.

No special cabling was used between the two, and it was a Ricky Hatton fight that had been filmed in HD, as well as a football match.

However I don't know any technicalities of the format, or what would be needed to do this. I would have assumed the filming in 3D and the glasses should be enough?

Yes, no problem if it was an anaglyph presentation. I was just pointing out that polaroid 3D isn't possible with a standard TV.

      Update:

We have today spoken to Sky regarding Sky+3D. Although Sky did not deny the trials, it was more of a 'No plans to launch' type answer, and our contact explained the following,

"Sky like to constantly try new innovations and appraise new ideas / technologies to further enhance their abilities to deliver to the end user"
