Sky And The BPI Announcement - Official Statement

Further to our recent news story regarding Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy and illegal downloads, we have contacted Sky with regards to some of the concerns, that we had, on behalf of our users.

Following our telephone conversation, we asked for an official announcement regarding our concerns, specifically:

      • Would Sky be using DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) to Police this?
      • Would Sky divulge any of our personal details if requested by the BPI without a court order?

Sky have very kindly responded to our questions, with the following statement.

      A Sky spokesperson:

“As both a major ISP and content provider we can see both sides of this complex debate. The rights of customers and copyright holders are both important, so we aim to take a collaborative approach through constructive dialogue with rights owners.

“By acting responsibly in addressing alleged infringements and developing easy ways for customers to access content, we believe we can move towards a sustainable, voluntary model which safeguards the rights of customers and rights holders. We believe our announcement with Universal is a very positive step in the right direction.

“We support a graduated notification process in which ISPs work with rights owners to inform and educate their customers about copyright infringements. The security and privacy of our customers is paramount, but we absolutely believe that rights owners should be supported in protecting their rights, as we do ourselves.

“We are in discussions with rights owners about how a notification trial might best deliver insight and inform future frameworks. However, for the trial we can confirm that we will only contact customers on the basis of those IP addresses provided to us from rights owners - we will not monitor customer behaviour ourselves. We will also ensure that the privacy of our customers is safeguarded and will not pass on customer information to rights owners.”

I think all the moaning has been done in the other thread. Why some people can moan about being prevented from breaking the Law beats me. Apart from homemade sex videos there is very little legal offerings on P2P sites.

I agree with you there but we was hoping this statment would put peoples minds at rest that Sky wont give their details to the BPI.

I think that statement should appeal to the illegal downloaders more than the copyright holders.

Re: Sky And The BPI Announcement - Official Statement

If they stick to their promise not to divulge information without a court order, I don't think there will be any problem for the illegal downloaders. I am not sure, but I think each one would require a separate court order, which would be very expensive for the BPI, or could they slap in a bundle in one go?

I think that's a very clear statement of "be careful where you download from".

Re: Sky And The BPI Announcement - Official Statement

I notice they were quick to say that they are both content provider as well as ISP, as them, the BBC and Microsoft are all pushing big time for more p2p file transfer not less as content providers.

Although I'm just waiting for Sky to do what it does best and completely make a real mess of it, by banning a load of people for using the Sky player or something.
