Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

Sky are one of six ISP's to sign a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the BPI to help spread the message of illegal file downloading. The other five ISP's are; BT, Virgin, Orange, Tiscali, and Carphone Warehouse.

The MOU, negotiated by the government, could possibly see hundreds of thousands of warning letters sent to those ISP's customers, who have been suspected of illegally sharing music.

Geoff Taylor, who is the chief executive of the BPI, which represents the music industry, said: "All of the major ISPs in the UK now recognise they have a responsibility to deal with illegal file-sharers on their networks."

The MOU commits the ISP's to working towards a "significant reduction" in the illegal sharing of music.

The ISP's signed up, are also committed to develop legal music services. "Conversations are ongoing between record labels and ISPs," said Mr Taylor. Which partly explains Sky's previous announcement on 22nd July, Sky to Partner with Universal Music for Innovative New Digital Music Service.

Think it's a case of sign up or be made to regret it later. There were rumours of measures being forced into place by the Government if the ISPs don't play ball

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

I think its a good thing personally, however it is bad news for those who use their ISP's connections for illegal downloading.

One of two things will happen:

      1) Those customers will go underground and try to bypass it as we saw with encryption etc

      2) Will go to one of the other ISP's that have not signed up

However, imho, I don't think anyone could proclaim to have never ever downloaded something that was illegal.

Will it stop the illegal downloading? Doubt it.

See, I don't accept that. If it is illegal, why should we do it? I wouldn't break into a house to steal something, without accepting or knowing that their would be consequences.

Yes I have the freedom of choice to make a decision to break the law, but I also know that if I got caught, I would be dealt with by the law. Which in reality is all that this memorandum states.

Therefore, we know it is wrong to do it, and if there are no consequences, there is no deterrent, which effectively makes it OK to do it. If that makes sense.

Why is it misleading? I don't see Sky Max advertised as Unlimited illegal file downloads?

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

I think the ISP are very happy to be 'forced' into trying to stop illegal file sharing. It is a known fact that a very high proportion of bandwidth is used by the activity, it will help ease the pressure on servers and allow ISPs to provide a better service to their user who use the net legally.

P2P sharing should be fairly easy to stop as it contains 99.5% illegal content, but torrents are a different matter. I don't know how easy it is to tell whether a user is downloading illegal movies/music or a perfectly legal Linux distro or other legal content. Anyone know?

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

did I say illegal file download? no i didn't. 'Unlimited' define that word for me.

and yes I agree, freedom of choice is being taken away from us imho.

Does this also mean, even we download 1 illegal download, we get sent letters through the door?? if so that is really mean.

Also, i seem to remember a big and now rubbishy program called 'Big Brother'??
