Either way has its problems though. If sky monitor, it would need to be DPI as you suggest, but then how would the BPI know if the file you downloaded was an infringment of copyright?

There are many ways in which to mask file types etc.

What would happen if a person was wrongly accused as the last bit I read was, and I qoute, "It is up to the individual to prove their innocence".

Sorry if I got this wrong, but I thought the law clearly stated that it was up to the prosecuter to prove a persons guilt, not for the person to prove their innocence?

Why do I get the feeling lots of Russian Proxy P2P Servers are going to start springing up?

On Copyright, I am pretty positive the owness is on you to prove it wasn't.

Hence why people nearly always settle out of court. Its too expensive to fight.

      "Unless Sky use DPI."

Will this slow things down?....like for example, security searches at the airport that have made flying nearly intolerable.

I just don't think the ISP's and the BPI have enough common purpose here for this whole deal to work. I take the point that downloaders may be a nuisance (one of my old flatmates used to download films but it didn't see to affect my speed).

Surely no business is going to turn away customers just to accommodate a pressure group from an unrelated industry -- though I note this announcement coincides with Sky talking about setting up a paid for music download service with a record company (hmmmm...)

      • DPI is also known as Deep Packet Inspection. Or in other words, Sky would be able to see everything you do and in the case of downloads what it contains. This is what I would object to.
      • As per the caught downloading something illegal, I think its a good step. (Personal view)

However those are two different things.

Would it slow you down? I would suppose so but only for a few ms if that.

As at yesterday, the Sky announcement about legal downloads didn't make much sense. Today it does. Sky are going to sell downloads, as:

      • It's part of the deal
      • People will be now frightened to download illegal songs etc

      Therefore:

      • The Artists and owners of the original copyright / material wins
      • The BPI wins
      • Sky wins and makes loads of money
      • And we all own legal songs

I don't think it would work exactly as the BPI plan, as if someone is intent on breaking the law, no one is going to stop them.

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

I have severe doubts about paid for downloads at current (iTunes-type) prices. I can buy a whole album on CD for between 50p and 3 (used) at car boot sales and charity shops. I can buy a current album new at retail for around 8.

Why anyone would pay nearly a quid to download a compressed copy protected version of one song is beyond my understanding.

And apparently there's a whole generation of kids who feel the same way -- they'll find a way round the restrictions the BPI are trying to impose or just strip out copy protection and swap stuff in the playground using bluetooth

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

That's fine but to stop illegal downloads they have to make it really attractive to buy legal downloads. Otherwise it's dead in the water from the start and people will seek alternative means to obtain what they want.

Someone once said, people don't park cars illegally because they want to. Its because there's not enough 'cheap' parking in the first place.

Wow, 5 pages of replies and this post isnt much over 6 hours old yet. I guess the people who are peeved here are the ones who do dl illegal content, movies, music, software etc. I cant be bothered to trawl thru this to quote people but statements like " I've only done it once - why should they pick on me" etc dont wash. If you pass a speed camera at 60 in a 30 once, rob somebodys house once, beat someone up once is that ok and you shouldnt be done ? I dont think so.

Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

Just come across this interesting statistic:

Apple claim current iPod "Holds up to 20,000 songs in 128-Kbps AAC format"

Using iTunes to fill this would cost 15,800.

Where do Apple think the tracks on the millions of iPods out there are coming from ?
