Re: Sky Sign Up With BPI To Help Stop Piracy

This should have about as much impact on audio piracy as slapping a BPI tax on so-called 'Music' CDRs. The industry was running scared that single-speed hifi-type CD recorders would encourage people to copy CDs for friends.

Result Music CDR's cost 50p each while everyone uses 5p data discs on computers which rip at 50 speed. The only people who still use CD recorders are musicians doing their own music -- tragically, they are the only people paying the BPI tax intended to protect musicians (and they don't even need to as they are recording stuff they own the copyright on).

BPI just don't get it that technology will always stay ahead of the law.

      Hi

I read your post to mean what you wrote, (in the context of this thread) that if you are not allowed to download illegal material, then they are effectively limiting Max. If that is not what you mean't then I apologise, but if that is not what you meant, it is in the wrong thread.

How can anyone define unlimited? In my eyes and yours, probably it means, with no limit, as much as you want etc

In an ISP's eyes, it means what they feel like offering today or tomorrow, as it is subject to a FUP.

However, not one person can complain that Sky have not lived up to their advertising for Max as being unlimited, as no one (yet to the best of my knowledge) has been kicked off the network for exceeding the unofficial 250 FUP limit. Therefore in my eyes Sky are not misleading anybody.

Or the fact that there will always be someone who would be prepared to break the law. Otherwise any current deterrents would mean we that we would be living in a society without the need for the Police.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying those who break the law should be penalised, I just know myself, I am accountable if I do so.

true, true, but why does sky have to kick you off, just for downloading illegal stuff, Is it not uploading that users should be penalised for, not the downloaders.

It also, seems to me, like the BPI, want their customers to buy, their expensive cd albums, even new dvd movies are expensive, 15-17 for a new film. 5-7 is much more acceptable.

And, even the police, share/download movies/music, they say 1 or 2 music/movies is ok, but if say share 1,000 of them then they say thats against the law, and you will be arrested.

So don't buy them new and wait a couple of months before they are reduced or turn up in a 3 for 20 deal.

It was only a matter of time before this happened and personally I don't have a problem with it.

If you get caught downloading 1 illegal download, probably yes. Therefore, don't get caught, or don't download illegal downloads.

I would still argue that the chances of getting caught are slim, however, they are significantly higher than before the MOU.

It all comes down to what you accept as morally right or wrong. If you look at the argument of CD's, and that they are over priced in the UK, (which they are) in your mind, downloading or buying a knock off CD is acceptable, it does not make it right to do so. But if they dropped the prices of CD's down to say 5 I would again argue, that I would prefer to buy the original CD instead of a copy at 2 - as I would get the original product, with artwork etc.

I am not judging you, I just have a different view point.

If you are downloading using P2P or torrent clients then you are also uploading. If you are not, then you are in fact cheating the cheaters.

That argument is like saying, "But your honour... I was only the getaway driver, I didn't steal the money from the bank" and hope that the Judge was stupid, so as not to penalise you.

You would still be committing an offence.
