Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

Update: I mean't to put Mossywell's not Mognuts

I would assume if you are using Mognuts to increase the NM change to ADSL2 or the telnet daemon etc then it could cause problems.

Like I said it is not an official guideline or in fact official notification.

The first we heard 2 weeks ago was the fact that over 100k routers a week were going to be upgraded. This has since not been denied or accepted so logically it is going to take a few weeks for everyone to be upgraded.

Maybe its a way of informing those people using Mognuts, it may just throw a spanner into the works for those scheduled to be upgraded on X day.

Two interesting excuses in one post.
I will start to make a little list.

      1. It's Netgear's fault.
      2. It's the Couriers fault.

Have Sky said how many of the ( 1.5 Million) users have problems
      with routers?
It would be nice to know the size of the "minority" before the
      forced firmware upgrade.

I am not psychic. I used to be with AOL.

If you feel that strongly about it then drop sky an e-mail with your MAC number and tell sky you like things how they are and you dont want the update. Its worth a try.

Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

Okay, I currently use Mossywells app to monitor my connection because it's so damn bad. It has to reboot the router several times a day just to maintain a connection. I'm assuming the new FW will stop the app from communicating with the router? If so that sucks big time, my connection will become unusable! I'm not going to go to my router every hour to reboot it manually. This is the worst news I've heard yet, if this FW rolls out and I get the upgrade, it's going to screw up my connection. So come May I'll have to move to yet another provider!

Not only that, but I'm assuming all settings will be lost, and no warnings will be given of the update in advance? That means all my Firewall rules will be lost, along with my LAN IP setup and service rules and port forwarding. The more I think about this the bigger the problem seems. I spent ages configuring everything to get it working just right, now Sky are going to enforce this unwanted "upgrade" without giving any warnings or choice as to when to implement it!

Well I dunno, I would expect a firmware update to just automatically upgrade and overwrite whatever was already stored. I hope I'm wrong because that's one less thing to be concerned about.

Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

I think it very unlikely that your settings will be lost, but it will be a little risky to be using Mossywell's bounce app while the upgrade is ongoing. If the new firmware image download "saturates" the broadband connection, the bounce app might think that the router has frozen up and it might attempt to reboot it.

If the router is rebooted whilst the flash memory is being reprogrammed, it's quite likely to leave the router in it's "recovery" state with the alternately flashing power and tick lights. It should be possible to get the router working again by using the Netgear Recovery Utility.

If you're really unlucky, however, and the reboot occurs just as the boot section of the flash is being rewritten, the router won't be recoverable without a soldering iron and some specialised equipment. In that situation, Sky would have to replace the router really - just make sure you don't mention the Mossywell app!

By the way, have you tried using the unofficial CU2.04 firmware, announced elsewhere on the forum? It has an updated version of the ADSL driver and it's been rock solid for me (even if I do say so myself). This has the advantage that when the firmware upgrade becomes available, the router will simply overwrite the unofficial firmware and replace it with the official updated Sky firmware.

The whole idea behind the new FW is to stop problems like these, ie so your router if you are having problems will be more stable.

Not only that, but I'm assuming all settings will be lost, and no warnings will be given of the update in advance? That means all my Firewall rules will be lost, along with my LAN IP setup and service rules and port forwarding.
You are fearing the worst and for no reason imho. It is highly unlikely that you will lose anything. Rules, config etc even your password should remain exactly the same as before the update.
