Well, there's a certain amount of truth in that. I have a server sitting in a data centre which I believe to be very secure. There's certainly no obvious way that someone could hack into it. But I've no way of knowing whether there are potential exploits in, say, Apache or Courier MTA, just waiting to be discovered. So yes, it would be fair to say that I can't be sure that my server is 100% secure.

But the V1 router has a vulnerability that is known by me and, I suspect, Sky as well. I can find out the ADSL username and password of any Sky DG834GT that has wireless enabled, provided I'm within wireless range of that router. And that includes people who have changed their WPA password.

There is a big difference between a small theoretical risk and a great big gaping hole.

For sure, but more importantly/significantly known to Netgear also, the manufacturer of the firmware that Sky are using. Sky are completely vulnerable to Netgear's ability to deliver a practical working solution. That it has taken Netgear this long to cough up something that Sky actually feel confident to use, I believe, says it all. That Netgear are not really to be trusted - but they were obviously quite happy to take the money at some point.

Yes, it could be argued that it is up to Sky to manage the relationship and what is ultimately delivered. And that would be fair enough. The balance to that, though, is that the supplier (Netgear in this instance) let their customer down quite badly. Sadly, an all too common occurrence with such technologies originating from t'other side of the pond. As a long-term buyer of such things my own experience is that the up-sell rarely meets the reality, most particularly where bespoke is required.

if sky were to roll out the FW by leaving it to be downloaded (like from there website) and then say, sent an email to all customers saying the update was available with instructions on how to do it, you could then upgrade ?
      YES

James you said that the V1 router security hole could still be exploted even if the WPA password has been changed.

I also use MAC address filtering on the wireless side of things, I assume that this at least stops anybody trying it on with my router or is the router still vuneralble with this added layer of security?

On a side note Stevenage exchange hasn't been done yet so I am geussign it will be May/June for us as our exchange has had 3 loads of equipment put it and is still full so lots of customers here and so lots of things to go wrong.

Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

The point I was making was that Sky insist that you only attach secure equipment to their network, but the router itself isn't secure because it's possible to get the ADSL username and password from any V1 router which has wireless switched on and which is within wireless range. The only way to stop that is to switch wireless off completely. But the problem in this case is more about gaining authorised access to Sky's network, rather than to your home network.

To make sure your own network is secure, all you need to do is change the WPA network key. So no need to worry.

I wonder what is the time interval between the exchange orientated downloads - it seems to have gone a bit quiet since the first wave of updates.

We believe there will be another wave of exchanges done this week. The only reason they are not hammering the upgrades is to measure failures I would have guessed.

Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

Just a quick question...... If 100k routers are being updated a week and there are about 390k customers with Sky Broadband then why will updating all the routers take about 3 months?
