When the router decides its time to check for a firmware update, it sends its MAC address and firmware version to the update server which then replies either "here's your nice, juicy 4MB flash image" or "sorry, nothing for you today".

The only surprise is that they're rolling it out on a "per exchange" basis rather than on the basis of blocks of MAC addresses, but I can see how that makes support easier (if things do go wrong) and it wouldn't be too challenging for Sky to generate a list of MAC address for the all Sky routers which connect to a given exchange or group of exchanges.

      It's for definite

      Hi Ged

We can confirm that we are upgrading the Phase 1 firmware as part of our general maintenance activities; this is being gradually deployed to the entire base through a remote upgrade process.

      Cheers

4TB (a million Sky DG834GT routers x 4MB) is a heck of a lot of data to shift around. But I think Sky main problem with updating everyone at once is that if it goes wrong, that's an awful lot of unhappy customers.

S'cuse me, I've been watching the last few days and one question I cannot shift .... What's the rush?

And why would any ISP build capacity to perform a concurrent update to its entire base of routers requiring update? Let it trickle out, there really is no need rush at all.

I have three friends nearby who are all on Phase 1 routers and I asked them the same question - they're all quite content to wait it out for Sky to get it right rather than have it now.
It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.

People who have had problems with the DG834GT router have used various techniques to get around the deficiencies of the original Sky firmware. People who have reflashed their router to the standard Netgear firmware and people who have been using the Mossywell app now have to stop doing that, and so that means months of unreliable connectivity waiting for Sky to get around to updating their firmware.

And yes, yes, yes, theoe people are a small minority of Sky's customers, but it's precisely that minority who so desperately need the new firmware. The only people who aren't bothered about how soon they get the new firmware will be the people who don't actually need it.
