They may well be designed to be on 24/7, but that doesn't mean people do that. I have it connected to my PCs power extension which has surge protection etc.. and is turned off at night when I go to bed. It may not use a lot of power, but any energy that can be saved by turning things off when not in use I try to do so.

I do exactly the same as Luffer. #91

But after 18 months it is still going strong.

The thermal stress that that inflicts on the router could quite possibly reduce its life expectancy, and making a new router requires energy and creates more non-degradable waste. From an ecological point of view, it's a finely balanced argument as to whether it's better to leave it on or better to switch it off.

Assuming it's not the 10p per week in electricity costs you worried about…

Re: Sky Phase 1 Firmware upgrade confirmed!!!!

Hi, Sorry if it's already been asked, but does anyone know if there are plans to update the firmware on the newer V2 routers at some point ?
Unfortunately I have a long standing REIN interference fault on my line that BT are no longer willing to spend time investigating. The Netgear v2 DG934G I received when I signed up to SKY MAX, is having the same problems as the Netgear DG834v2 (non-wireless) I had with the previous ISP. Namely, the noise margin is dropping very low causing the router to re-sync several times a day. I was hoping the "tweak" being applied to the V1 routers via firmware update would be rolled out to all the Netgear routers SKY issue.

      Regards
      Alex

No mention of one that I am aware of, although there will be, more than likely at some point in the future.

No it's not the 10p per week, it's the energy saving effects that I am concerned about. The argument about thermal stress is valid, however, I believe the risks of electrical fires being started by devices left on or in standby give the switch off approach the edge. Sure the risks are small, but talk to a fireman about it and hear some of the stories they can tell and you might just change your mind!

      Today is the day!

BTW, I forgot to mention, the upgrades will be done on a exchange - to - exchange basis i.e. they will upgrade exchanges in blocks, so it may take a couple of days for people to notice. Sky have done it this way to reduce strain on the upgrade servers.

Any idea on what sort of order they plan on doing this? e.g. north to south, shotgun style, or the standard "who knows we just easynet to do it" approach?

Oh, standard NewsReader line about not releasing info if it can be traced back to you of course.
