Sky Dropping 0870 Numbers - Imminent

We reported here on 3rd July 2007 that Sky were to drop the 0870 Numbers.

We now have unconfirmed news that this is imminent. Which is good news for all, although I think Ofcom had an influence in Sky doing so.

08442 414141 is the new Sky Main number.

08442 410499 is the new number for Broadband and Phone

I rang the broadband tech support 0870 number earlier and it starts with a recorded message informing you that the number will soon change to 0844........

So the price per minute may fall but the inclusive call plans will charge for these calls and the mobiles will hammer you in costs.

Keep digging up the geog numbers!

Because if it is included in the inclsive minutes (like the geo numbers that are banded about) then it is free. i.e from 8am -6pm, before Sky Talk make geo numbers free -6pm onwards.

the costs for the new numbers is 5ppm at any time, with a 6p connection cost, but that connection cost is BT not Sky.

Sky are starting to promote these numbers on their website:

      Sky.com - Sky Help Centre>Contact Us

I am also pretty sure I saw them in their newspaper/magazine adverts as well.

      Questions, questions.....lol

Does anyone know what the savings to us with these new numbers are? What were the old charges? And if you are with Sky for rental and phone does the 6p connection charge still apply?

I notice that they are moving over to 0844 numbers which are cheaper but why still use these old non-geographical numbers that ofcom have critisided and not move over to the new 03 ones that are included in call packages? (apart from Sky recieveing 2p a minute from them of course)

I don't think Sky deserve any kind of pat on the back for this. Ofcom's investigation of Number Translation Services (NTS) ended up deciding that 0870 numbers should be charged at the same rate as a national, geographic calls, so the only difference between an 0870 number and one of the new 03 numbers (or indeed, a 01506 number) would be that the 0870 call wouldn't come out of any inclusive minutes that you may have.

An 0844 number can be charged at up to 5p per minute (and it's often very difficult to find out exactly how much you are going to be charged for a call) and so Sky's new numbers are the most expensive they could get, without moving to an 09 number. In fact, all calls to Sky will now be charged at 5p per minute, so while it will be 2.9p per minute cheaper during a work day, it will actually be more expensive to call them in the evening or at the weekend.

      Not such good news really.
