A white Netgear DG824GT duly arrived on my doorstep this week which was sent to me in a moment of desperation by Tier 1 rep as a way of getting me off the phone at the time, I think, the usual "how many lights are on" and "you must have a virus infection" BS not having worked on me. According to him, when I asked him for a Netgear, he had no control over what kind of router was going sent out. Its done on a first-come first-served basis with whatever they have in stock.

Out of interest, I've fired it up. There's a few more software "knobs and switches", now especially thanks to James, but all in all, the performance of the wired router (don't use it for WiFi), is no better than the Sagem it was sent to replace, as my problems stem from my attenuation and possibly line noise.

      RTB.

They should replace mine with the new one, UPnP doesn't work which I really need for my gaming addiction :P

Re: New Router Now Being Despatched

I called Sky with my MAC code so I could get my broadband with them (tried just over a year ago but gave up, and now my 12month contract has expired so I decided to try again). They said they would send me a new router and I had to call back once I had it.
They have sent me a black router (netgear) which came today.
I called back tonight, gave them my MAC code, and they said the system has accepted it, but they didn't need it because they supply my broadband????? I am sooo glad I had signed up for base with the intention of upgrading once it was working!
I did a test on speedtest.net to check, and my current ISP is showing on that. So they obviously just wanted me off the phone, and I have been told I have to phone back tomorrow to cancel, even though I don't have the service!
I feel like just cancelling everything sky related, but that would be like shooting myself in the foot as my street is not cabled.

Does anyone know how I can sort this mess out?
My MAC is only valid until the 20th of March, and thats when my current ISP will switch me off to. When I tried to get sky BB before I ended up without BB for 6 weeks, and I don't want that again!

      Thanks in advance

^^^ This sounds to me as though you are in the process of being switched from your old provider to Sky. You can only have one provider on your line and I think the way it works is that a date is agreed when your old provider switches off and your new one switches on.

Why cancel? You should get a letter telling you when your Sky connection will be activated and on that date you should be able to plug in your new router.

Thanks for the quick reply. They said I have been connected since Nov 2006, plus I only gave them the MAC tonight.

Re: New Router Now Being Despatched

Further to my previous posts, I told them to stuff it, and cancel everything, and lo and behold, I was put through to an expert, who took 10 seconds to cancel and reorder it. I now have a provisioning date of 19th. The expert is also phoning me every couple of days to keep me updated. Why could it not have been like this from the start?
Seems like its the luck of the draw who you speak to whether you get customer service or a bum deal!

Re: New Router Now Being Despatched

am i right in thinking though that the old DG834GT from netgear supported 108Mps wireless, wheras the new DG934G is only b & g compliant ie only upto 54Mps...

why cant sky allow their customers to have a bit of a leeway with choice, for instance if you wanted a more upto date N+ / Mimo router instead... your a bit stuffed officially - is that right????

Just a thought that if there customer is willing to put their hand in their pocket for something a little bit more special....

dont get me wrong it really IS a good offer, what you get from SKY but just seems a little constrained

Re: New Router Now Being Despatched

i know the best part of nothing about wireless, but just had a look in the wireless settings on my V1 router and saw this:
      Channel

This field determines which operating frequency will be used. It should not be necessary to change the wireless channel unless you notice interference problems with another nearby access point.

      Mode

Select the desired wireless mode. The options are:

      g & b - Both 802.11g and 802.11b wireless stations can be used.
g only - Only 802.11g wireless stations can be used.
Auto 108Mbps - All 802.11g, 802.11b and Netgear 108Mbps wireless stations can be used.
      Note:

      802.11b - 11Mps.
      802.11g - 54Mps.
The default is "g & b", which allows both "g" and "b" wireless stations to access this device.
i have no idear what it means

THIS is the 'old' router, it is definitely 108mbps, although this is usually only atainable with compatible Netgear adapters.
