google will be hosting the mail servers...
      domain pop.tools.sky.com is a CNAME for bskyb-pop.google.com.
looks like google hosting the dns for the mail aswell

Effectively this sounds like Google Apps Premier edition (which usually costs around 25 quid per account per year for 10Gb mail storage) - so Sky users are indeed getting a bargin!

Best news yet, although I'm already on the Premier edition of Google Apps and thus don't need or use my Sky Broadband email account.

well it definitely a good deal for Sky and there broadband customers, Sky wont have to have expensive servers or software and will also save money on not employing people to monitor/fix the servers/software, and for the customers its peace of mind as they will be having there mail accounts on a tried and trusted service, perhaps Plusnet should take note

My one complaint is their use of this phrase:

      "Virtually unlimited storage (10GB*)"

10Gb is not unlimited. Unlimited implies that you have no limits.

Unless Sky and Google do intend to do away with that 10Gb quota, or increase it for those for go over 10Gb (unlikely), then I'd strongly suggest that BSkyB alters their phrasing in case a complaint should accidentally be sent to Ofcom. A better word, perhaps, might be "inexhaustible" since how many people are really going to need more than 10Gb of email storage?

      Here:

Sky Broadband is getting even better…

I also note from the FAQ:

      5. Do I have to wait to be moved?

In order to securely move all of our existing customers from the original Sky Email to Sky Email 'powered by Google' - along with all of your old emails and contacts - we're doing it in stages. This is why some Sky Email users might still have the original version, while others will be using the new Sky Email and Tools. Don't worry. You'll soon be enjoying the benefits of Sky Email and Tools. In the meantime, any new @sky.com email accounts you create (remember, you get up to 10 addresses with Sky Broadband) will be on the new Sky Email 'powered by Google'. You can try it out now - just go to My Sky on www.sky.com to create your additional user accounts.
which isn't true, as I've just created an additional user and it's told me, having logged on as the new user, that the mail has to be migrated.

I DO wish the marketing department at BSkyB would let the systems guys finish testing first before going live. Sigh.

Re: Google Mail on it's way for Sky Broadband User's

I've discovered that you can get to the Sky mail interface through:

      https://mail.google.com/a/sky.com/acs

If you're still logged into sky.com, you'll be taken to the email interface directly without having to go through sky.com/tools. You can't log directly into the system through Google (well, I've not tried - I ought to cleanse my cookies[1]) because I'm sure they're using the SSO API with Google to authenticate people. When I mentioned that new accounts aren't set-up on the new system - well, actually they ARE. It's just that the bit of code that tells you the account isn't migrated yet doesn't seem to take into account brand new accounts. If I tried logging on as my original Sky.com account it tells me that the account doesn't exist at Google.

I *HATE* the customised interface. The main window is too big, the colours are too washed out and it feels like some child's plaything.

10 years working with mail systems, and even wrote a complete mail system in BASIC including user interface - so he knows his stuff. Or hopes he does.

[1] Actually, you try going through the above URL without being logged into Sky.com, you'll get redirected here:

Yes, the new settings for Outlook are in our Email forum, they will only work once you have been migrated though.
